ウィリアム・シュワード・バロウズ2世 ( William Seward Burroughs II / 1914-1997 ) は、 アメリカ人の小説家、エッセイスト、社会批評家、画家、スポークン・ワード・パフォーマーだった。彼が多くのロックミュージシャンにいまも支持され愛され続けるのは、すべてが彼の経験に基づいた自伝的な20冊を越える作品が、事実尊重主義の生き様をただ書き写しただけに、リアルだ

からだ。セントルイスのテイラー高校を卒業した'32年、自由へのチケットを手にした彼の数奇な人生の始まりはニューヨークの同性愛者のサブ・カルチャーに接したことや、英文学を専攻していたハーバード大学時代にモルヒネに溺れることによって始まった。'44年にジャック・ケルアックと会い、ジョーン・ヴォルマー、アレン・ギンズバーグ，ハーバート・ハンケら
ジャズ言語に精通しているビート・ジェネレーションの悪者ニュー・ボヘミアンどもと、盗みから麻薬常用者、同性愛者としての放蕩の日々を謳歌しながらメキシコ・シティなどを旅し新しい生命感覚を体現していた。ハーバート・ハンケをモデルにした" ジャンキー " を書き下ろした'53年のその年、戦後のタンジールでのレッセフェール ( 為すに任せよ ) な自由放任、無干渉主義のすべてが許されるゆるい空気は、過去のバロウズの地獄のような生活に大きな転機を与える切っ掛けにもなった。このタンジールでの言語、文化、国籍、およびセクシュアリティなどの境界がかすんだ理想郷は " 裸のランチ " のなかの主人公ビルの麻薬がもたらした " Nothing is true; everything is permitted " 、妄想の中の人間の妄想の世界=インターゾーンとして描かれている。当時タンジェでは代用ヘロイン = エウコドル（ユーコドル）が薬局のカウンターごしに買え、バロウズは薬漬けになっていたという。そういえば、デヴィッド・クロネンバーグの'91年の映画 " 裸のランチ ( Naked Lunch) " では、77年に発表されたオーネット・コールマンの " ダンシング・イン・ユア・ヘッド " のなかの " ミッドナイト・サンライズ " という曲がテーマに使われているが、それはオーネットがモロッコのジャジューカ ( Jajouka ) の音楽家たちとコラボレーションしたものだ。評論家、大場正明氏の " 裸のランチ - オリジナル・サウンドトラック/ ハワード・ショア+オーネット・コールマン " のライナーノーツでも指摘されているように'90年に発刊されたテッド・モーガンの純文学ともいえるバロウズの伝記 " Literary Outlaw " のなかには、モロッ
コのジャジューカに関する次のような記述がある。 " ジャジューカでは年に1回、牧羊神のお祭が行われ、これは、バロウズが通う行事でもあった。特別のアトラクションでは、偉大なジャズ・サックス奏者オーネット・コールマンが熟達した演奏家たちのテクニックを学ぶために登場し、彼らと共演することになっていた。・・・演奏家たちにオーネットが加わり、拮抗するハー
モニーを作り上げたとき、バロウズには、自分が、2000年間生き続けるロックン・ロール・バンドを聴いているように思えた。カルタゴの時代から続く音楽とモダン・ジャズ、ふたつの表現が出会ったとき、音の新しいフロンティアが誕生したのだ " と。バロウズは、'54年から'57年の末にパリに移住 ( バロウズは'58年にパリのドゥマゴ " Deux Magots " でダダのトリスタン・ツァラ、60年代にはデュシャン、マン・レイにも会っていて、あるパーティーでは、ギンズバーグが賛美と敬意のキャンプショーでデュシャンの足にキスしたという話もある ) するまでの間に何度もタンジールを訪れている。モロッコのグナワ・ズィクル・ジャジューカは、68年にブライアン・ジョーンズが世界的に有名にさせた音楽だが、神とのコミュニケーションやジン（悪霊）にとりつかれた人たちの精神的治療のために演奏されるものだが、いまでは現地を訪れる観光客用の音楽と化しているが、バロウズはマラケシュでこの悪魔払いの儀式による洗礼を受けたのだろうか。

バロウズが作家として自立しだしたのは、アメリカを捨てパリに、そして64年ロンドンに滞在し " ノヴァ急行 " を書き、ブライオン・ガイシンがモンタージュ手法の応用、カットアップ、ドリームマシーンを発明した頃からで、彼の晩年はジェネシス・P・オーリッジのスロッビング・グリッスルからキャバレーヴォルテール、イアン・カーティス、ルー・リード、デヴィッド・ボウイ、ブライアン・イーノ、カート・コバン、ニック・ケイヴ、ローリー・アンダーソン、パティ・スミスなどの、ロックやパンク・コミュニティに支えられ充実した日々を過ごすことができたのではないだろうか。バロウズ自身も述べているように彼の一生は一日中まとわり憑かれている悪霊との戦いだった。地獄の口を開けた残忍な堕落した理解し難い迷宮のような壊れた記号ことばで語るシャーマン、中折帽を被った孤独な傷つき易い心を持ったアンダーグラウンドのコミッショナー、インナースペースの宇宙飛行士＝精神領域の探検家、そしてなによりも人間の愛情や真心を求めていた彼の魂は、あの世では、もう救われているのだろうか。バロウズがサイバーパンク" ノヴァ3部作 " で預言したノヴァ（超新星）の爆発が天変地異をもたらし、地球の内紛を扇動するため他の銀河系からヴィールス的寄生物、破壊的な昆虫、悪霊などがやってきて人間の肉体に侵入し、精神を操り、崩壊をもたらすという黙示録的物語りの、この惑星の暗い未来に住む子供達は、それを知ってか知らずか、いま玩具のようにそのカットアップ・メソッドを使いオリジナルを弄くっている。さて、我々の目的とするタンジールは、砂漠の中に浮かび上がる蜃気楼のなかに消えたままだ。

クリスマス・イヴが来るとなぜか毎年、メランコリックでノスタルジックな心の傷みがチクチクする。それもなぜか不安感の取り除かれた幸せ感のなかで。毎日がクリスマス・イヴの聖夜のように、過ごせたらどんなに幸せだろうかと、生かされていることを神に祈り、友人や周りを支えてくれている人たちに感謝のこころを忘れずに・・・。バロウズの " The Junky's Christmas " の映像を観ていたら、なぜかとても素直にそんなことも言える。

The Junky's Christmas is a 1993 short claymation film directed by Nick Donkin and Melodie McDaniel. William S. Burroughs wrote the story and narrates the film; he also appears in live-action footage at the beginning and end of the film. The story originally appeared in the 1989 collection Interzone and the recording of Burroughs reading the story was also released on the CD Spare Ass Annie and Other Tales.
The film was produced by Francis Ford Coppola and was released by Koch Vision on DVD in North America on Nov. 21, 2006.

John Giornoが主宰する自主制作レコード・レーベル " Giorno Poetry Systems " が制作した'78年にニューヨークで3日間行われたバロウズの " Nova Convention " のミックス・メディア・パフォーマンスに集ったフランク・ザッパからパティ・スミス、ジョン・ケージ、フィリップ・グラス、ローリー・アンダーソン、ティモシー・リアリー、アレン・ギンズバーグ、ブライオン・ガイシンなどなど17名のアーティストによるリーディング、パネル・デイスカッション、フィルム・ショーなどが収録された2枚組ライヴ録音盤。'79年と言えばニューヨークではNo NewyorkやNo Waveの波が頂点に達していた頃で、すべての音楽や文学、舞踏、美術、芸術がポストモダンにシンクロして発展していた時代だった。ここには収録されていないが、他にロバート・フリップ、ブロンディなどのロック・パフォーマンスも行われたそうだ。バロウズはハードボイルドな散文小説、自叙伝、カットアップ・テクニック、サイエンスフィクション、風刺、ドラッグ経験の話、政治上の宣告などを語っている。

GIORNO POETRY SYSTMS RECORDS 1980

Giorno Poetry Systemsは詩人でパフォーマンス・アーティストのJohn Giornoによって'65年に設立された。ニューヨーク生まれの若い詩人だったJohn Giornoは、60年代にはアンディ・ウォーホルやロイ・リキテンシュタイン、マース・カニングハム、ジョン・ケージのフィールドから登場し、ウォーホルはフィルム " Sleep (1963) " に8時間眠り続ける彼の映像を撮影している。Giornoは、アクティヴなポップアートのアイデアを応用し，電話やテレヴィ、レコードなどの日常的なメディアを使い、当時雑誌や本でしか展開できなかった閉塞した詩の置かれた状況を、もっと有用なものへと変革しようとしていた。ウィリアム・バロウズやブライオン・ガイシンと共に'65年から始めたGiorno Poetry Systemsでのテープによるループやカットアップ・テクニックを応用した実験は、後にモーグ・シンセサイザーの開発者として知られる電子工学者ロバート・モーグ（Robert Moog ）にまで浸透する。彼の実験で最も画期的で有名なのは15の電話回線で繋がれた留守番電話で、ダイヤルすればいつでも詩の朗読が聴けるというDial - A - Poemというシステムを生み出したこと。

画家、詩人、小説家、発明者、歴史家、パフォーマー、多くの影響を周囲に与える触媒人 ( catalyst ) のブライオン・ガイシンは、バロウズにとっては無二の存在だったろう。このアルバムは、切り刻まれたオーディオ・パームティエーション・ポエム ( audio permutiation poem ) は、印刷言葉にはない行間や語間を通して変異性を生む、言葉や文章とはその行間を読むことだとは、よく言ったものである。彼の発明したものは、'58年に画家が50年間使っていたカットアップ・テクニックをバロウズに提案し、60年にBBCから依頼を受けたの銃声の入った音の作品 " ピストル詩 " 、人間の脳のアルファリズムに影響するように設計された揺らめく光のシリンダ " ドリームマシーン " など、ひょっとしたらボクはバロウズよりも、彼の構成主義的な世界のほうがより好みかも知れないなと思う。このアルバムのバックカヴァーには、彼の乱交パーティ仲間として、バロウズとミック・ジャガー、キース・リチャード、イギー・ポップ、デヴィッド・ボウイ、パティ・スミス、アレン・ギンズバーグに捧げるというメッセージが書き込まれている。

音楽の好き嫌いは別にしても、カート・ドナルド・コベイン ( コバーン ) の存在は、現在の若いロックファンにとって、ボクのブライアン．ジョーンズやジム・モリソン、イアン・カーティスへの思いと同じような意味を持つ最後のロック・イコンだろう。最後の、と言い切ったのは、ロックの世界にはもうこうした存在は2度と現れることがない、だろうと、思うからだ。個人的にはニルヴァーナの音楽にたいして興味を抱かなかったが、コベインのルックスの持つスター性と、それに反抗するかのように、一貫してとり続けた音楽業界へのスタンスと態度は、ずっと肯定していた。彼はあまりにも美しく生まれ過ぎたのだ。ニール・ヤングの曲の一節 " 錆び付くより今燃え尽きる方がいい( It's better to burn out than to fade away ) " が彼の残した遺書に引用されていたらしいが、双極性障害と薬物依存の人生を終える2年前に、ウィリアム・バロウズとコラボレートした気持ちが痛いほどよくわかる。ほんとうのオルタナのメンストリームに自身の音楽をリセットしたかったんだ。「聴くことにも創ることにも、もう随分長いこと興奮を覚えなくなっていた。そういったことに、俺は言葉に尽くせぬ罪を感じている。例えば楽屋にいると会場の照明が落ちて、群衆の狂ったような叫びが聞こえてきても、それは群衆の憧憬の念を愛し、楽しんでいたらしいフレディ･マーキュリーに与えたような影響を、俺には与えないんだ。そのことは俺が、心から尊敬し、羨まく思っていたことなんだ。要するに、俺は君たち誰ひとり騙すわけにはいかないんだ。君たちにとっても、俺にとってもフェアじやないから。この思いをごまかして、あたかも自分が100％楽しんでいるかのようなフリをするなんて、俺が考え得る最悪の犯罪だ。ステージに上がる前に、タイム･カードを押した方がいいんじゃないかと思う時がある。俺が、そして俺たちがたくさんの人間に影響を与え、楽しませてきたんだという事実を喜べるように、できるだけの努力はしたんだ。俺はたぶん、独りでないと物事を楽しめないナルシストってやつなんだ。感受性が強すぎるんだよ。かって子供の頃に持っていた情熱を取り戻すには、もう少し鈍感になる必要がある、ここ3回のツアーでは、個人的な知り合いや、俺たちの音楽のファンを、前よりずっとありがたく思えるようになっていた。それでも俺は、みんなに対する不満、罪悪感、そして同情から脱け出すことができなかった。人間、誰しも長所がある。俺はただ、人間を愛しすぎるんだ。愛しすぎて、あまりにも---情けない---情けなくて、ちっぽけで神経質な、歓迎されない女々しい魚座のジーザス野郎に思えてくる。いい人生だったよ。本当にいい人生だった。ただ、俺は7歳の頃から人間全般に憎しみを抱くようになっていたんだ。たぶん、単純に俺は人を愛しすぎ、人の気持ちがわかりすぎるからなんだろう。今までにもらった手紙や思いやりに、焼けただれた腹の底から礼を言うよ。俺はどうしようもなく変人で気分屋だから、もう情熱を失ってしまったんだ。覚えておいてくれ。消え去るより、燃え尽きた方がいいんだってことを。平和、愛、同情、カート･コバーン 1994年4月 」。
