様々なイメージのコラージュで構築された４枚目のアルバム " Fast Asleep " を2002年に残して、ファンキー・ポルチーニの消息はいっさい不明になってしまった。当時としては少々時代遅れの感のあるそのDVD付きの作品は話題になることもなかったが、そのなかの曲 " What Are You Looking At?" で使わ

れているヴォイス " Gentlemen, science is agreed, that if something isn't done and done quickly, man as the dominant species of Earth will be extinct within a year ( ジェントルマン、・・・・地球の優占種としての人類は1年以内に絶滅するでしょう ) "は、 George Worthing Yates原作の'56年の Ted Sherdeman and Russell Hughes制作のクラシック・サイフェンスフィクション映画 " Them! " からのサンプリングが使われ、終末の気配の漂った
作品でもあり、ジャケットも部屋に山と積まれたシンセサイザーやテープ、オーディオ装置の中で、気怠く虚脱したかのように寝転がっている女性の写真が使われていて、ある意味でファンキー・ポルチーニの最後を暗示しているかのようでもあった。80年代から90年代初期までテレヴィとフィルムの音楽を作るためにイタリアに10年間在住していたジェームズ・ブラッデル ( James Bradell ) は、キエール・フレイザー ( Keir John Fraser ) と、 9Lazy9名義で " Take Nine ( 1993 ) " 、" Black Jesus ( 1994 ) " など3枚のEP、 " Electric Lazyland ( 1994 ) " 、 " Paradise Blown " の2枚のアルバムをイギリスのニンジャ･チューンよりリリースしていた。それはDJ Camやクルーダー・アンド・ドルフマイスターなどのクールなジャジー・ヒップホップとトリップホップの始まりでもあった。'94年にイギリスに戻ったブラッデルはファンキー・ポルチーニ ( Funki Porcini ) で、95年にニンジャ・チューンから " Long Road/Poseathon " と、 " Hed Phone Sex " をリリースする。エイフェックス・ツインの音楽スタイル

をよりポップにしたブレイクビーツは、ヒップホップ、ダブ、ダーティー・ジャズ、ヴォイス・サンプリングなどの融合した独特のアブストラクト世界が構築されていた。彼の音楽は " Pink Inflatable " や " Love, Pussycats & Carwrecks " にみられるようにセックスとポルノがそのメイン・コンセプトで猥褻でダイナミックなドラムンベース・グルーヴがクラブ空間を占領していた。当時ボクはルーク・ヴァイバートのPlugとWagon Christ、トーマス・ジェンキンソンのSquarepusherの間にこのファンキー・ポルチーニをミックスしながらDJイングしドラムンベース・グルーヴをよく構築したものである。ファンキー・ポルチーニのピークはやはり'96年の " Love, Pussycats & Carwrecks " だったろう。彼の最後の作品 " River Of Smack " をボクは後追いで購入していることでも、それは言える。ドラムン･ベースと音響系の混在した世紀末的黙示録ともいえるこの作品は、結果的にファンキー・ポルチーニの最後の作品となった。個人的には9 LAZY 9の、ジャズ、ラテンをベースにしたエレクトリック・ジャジー・ヒップホップと、ファンキー・ポルチーニでもジャジー・ヒップホップ、ジャジー・ドラムンベースが好みだが。

当時を振り返ってみても、結局こうしたクラブ・ミュージックを聴いていた人間などはごく限られた音楽ファンで、現在35歳ぐらいの人間はクラブに遊びに来ていても野次馬のようにスキャンダラスだった情報に群がるだけで常に無関心を装っていたように思う。驚くほどに打算的な経済観念とエコロジー/ニューエイジ的世界観だけは秀でたマイホーム主義者、それが30代の人間の持っている価値観の本質だと、いまも思うよ。過去のレコード音楽のアーカイヴを始めてから、ロック・ミュージックや現代音楽に関しての反応は予想以上にリアルにあるけれど、クラブ・ミュージックに関してはまるで暖簾に腕押しだね。音楽にはやはり言葉や評論による意味付けがあってこそ感情移入でき、生活のなかに引き寄せられるものなんだな。
