" VARIOUS / ARTIFIICIAL INTELLIGENCE" のVol.１のサブタイトルに使用されている"あなたはゆったり座って ( 寛いで ) いますか？”は、'69年のMoody Bluesに同タイトルの曲があったが、なにか関係でもあるのだろうか。

'92年にポスト・レイヴ・エレクトロニック、"長旅や静かな夜のためのエレクトロニック・リスニング・ミュージック"、"音楽が世界共通言語であることを実証する電子音楽の革新者による精神のための音楽"というコンセプトでコンピレッドされたArtificial Intelligenceの2作は現在まで
続いているモダン・エレクトロニック・ミュージックの幕開け、誕生となった。1枚目のアルバムカヴァーの肘掛け椅子に座って音響に傾聴するリスナーの足下には、クラフトワークのアルバム " Autobahn " とピンクフロイドの " Dark Side Of The Moon " が散乱している。それはプログレッシヴ・ロックからジャーマン・エレクトロニックまでのエクスペリメンタル・ミュージックの文脈にインテリジェンス・テクノを組込めと強要しているかのようだった。Michael Golding & Steve RutterによるB12 ( Musicology ) 、Autechre、Black Dog ( I.A.O. )、Richard D James (Dice Man、Polygon Window )などなど、ブリティッシュ・ポップカルチャーでのアバンギャルド精神は90年代を通して彼らに受け継がれてきた。'88年といえばボクはMacintosh IIのトリニトロン・モニターと256色のアニメーションの美しさに魅了されマックユーザーとしての道を歩むことになるのだが、カラーイメージスキャナやカラープリンタなどの周辺機器を買い揃えマックデザインともいうグラフィックデザインにチャレンジしていた時期でもあった。このArtificial Intelligenceの2作でのジャケットデザインと音楽の斬新さは、そのマッキントッシュIIの胸躍る体験と符号するため息がでるほど感動的なものだった。また、当時ヨーロッパやイギリスのクラブシーンにおいて、フライヤー（チラシ）やポスターはイベントの成否を左右するほど重要な告知媒体だったし、テクノシーンでのそれらの多くはマックデザインでphotoshopとillustraterを駆使しデザインされていた。クラブのフライヤーやポスター、ロゴ、タイポグラフィーなどは、このArtificial Intelligenceでのグラフィックデザインと同じように90年代という時代を象徴するもので、'97年にはNicola Ackland-Snow、Nathan Brett、Steven Williamsによる"Fly: The Art of the Club Flyer"などのペーパーバックが発刊されたりもしていた。そして時を同じくして3Dのコンピューター・グラフィックスによるモーション表現と呼ばれるテレビモニタやプロジェクタによってスクリーン上に投影したり、モーション・タイポグラフィー(動く文字）によってクラブ空間での映像演出を行うビデオ・ジョッキー(VJ、ヴィジュアル・ジョッキー)という新しいメディアが表出してきた時期でもあった。Artificial Intelligenceとは、アシッドからレイヴ、ブリープと流れた90年代初頭のクラブカルチャーで起こったアフター・ブリープテクノ、映像 (ヴィジュアル・イメージ)と音楽が一体となった"モダン・エレクトロニック・ミュージック"の始まりのことである。

B12 / ELECTRO - SOMA (WARP LP9)
マイク・ゴールディングとスティーブ・ラッターによって1990年にロンドンで設立されたB12。彼らの音楽もまたデトロイトテクノにあった未来派とサイエンスフィクションがテーマだった。1990年に彼らはPlus 8 レコードの音楽に奮い立たされ友人のKirk Degiorgio (As One)とSteve Pickton (Stasis)の協力のもとB12レコードを設立することになる。Applied Rhythmic Technologies(ART)レーベルは
Kirk Degiorgioと設立したレーベル。WarpからのArtificial IntelligenceでのMusicology"Preminition"、B12"Scriptures"の2曲を皮切りに、'93年にPercivalによるサイバーパンク風未来派ジャケットアート"Warp Electro-Somascape 12"が使われた"Electro-Soma"、'96年にはトレバー・ウェヴによるフューチャリスティック・ロンドンを描いたイラストのジャケット"Time Tourist"を。
A.R.T.レコードでのRedcell、Cmetric、Musicology名義での作品もすべてB12の別ユニットである。なおここでは紹介しないが、'98年にリリースされた"3EP"はジャズミュージシャンのデイヴ・ブルーベック、ジョー・モレロ、およびロン・カーターへの捧げ物としてリリースされている。

B12関係のA.R.T.、Likemindレーベルの作品などは入手困難なものだった。こうしたものが手許にあるのも、某輸入レコードショップに勤めていた知人がわざわざボクのために特別注文してくれていたからである。今では考えられない笑い話だが、この頃はレコード購入代に月に30万円は使っていた。それほど90年代初頭の音楽シーンは次から次とワクワクするような作品がリリースされていた時代でもあったのだ。

THE BLACK DOG / TEMPLE OF TRANSPARENT BALLS (GPR - L 1LP)
'80年代後半に結成されたエド・ハンドレイ(Ed Handley)、アンディ・ターナー(Andy Turner)、ケン・ダウニー(Ken Downie)からなるブラックドッグ。93年にワープでのAIシリーズとしてリリースされたアルバム " Bytes "でのエレクトロニックから生まれる金属質/硬質のグルーヴとイマジネーションを拡張させてくれるアバンギャルドなサウンドスケープは、当時のレイヴカルチャーに食傷ぎみの耳の肥えたクラウドたちにとっては、刺激的なものだった。とはいえクラブフロアでDJイングしても、多くの人間が引いてしまいこのグルーヴで踊っていたのはごく小数だったが。ワープでの活動と並行してGPRから'93年にアルバム"Temple of Transparent Balls"をリリース。その後95年にワープから"Spanners"を発表するが、アンディとエドがユニットを脱退( プラッドとして活動を開始する )することになり以後、ダウニーのソロプロジェクトとして活動を継続し、'95年にGeneral Production Recordingsから"Parallel" (この作品は'93年にオリジナルメンバーで録音されたもの)を、96年にワープからアルバム"Music for Adverts"をリリースしている。ブラックドッグの音楽はテクノではあるのだが、どこかにシャーマニックな世界が色濃く見られるが、これは残されたケン・ダウニーの世界観とも言えるだろう。この'96年の作品を最後にボクはブラックドッグの音楽を聴いていないが、'98年にはイエメンの歌手オフラ・ハザをフィーチャーした"Babylon"を発表したり、2002年にはBlack Sifichiによる詩の朗読をフィーチャーした"Unsavoury Products"などを発表していたというから、それも裏付けられるだろう。
’95年にブラックドッグを離れたターナーとハンドレーは、Plaid名義で'97年に2枚組アルバム" Not For Threes"、シングル"Undoneson"をリリースしているが、D2.での" Lilith accordion"で、ヴォーカルにBjörkをフィーチャーしたという話題性だけで、子供騙しのエレクトロニカといった作品でボクにはそれほど印象に残らなかった。

カナダのウインザーで活動していたリッチー・ホウティン（Richie Hawtin）のF.U.S.E.とはFuturistic Underground Subsonic Experimentsの略。デトロイトテクノとシカゴハウスをアシッドハウスへと転換させた彼は、90年にジョン・アクアヴィヴァと共に"Plus 8"レーベルを設立した。このレーベルから'94年にリリースされた彼のプラスチックマン名義でのセカンド" Muzik "でのミニマルテクノは、Roland TB-303、TR-808という器材を使った作品での頂点を象徴するものだった。彼はこのFUSE以外にも、サーキット・ブレイカー、プラスティックマン、ハードトラックスなどなどの名義を使い分けていた。

初期Cabaret Voltaire's "International Language." からSandoz' “Chant to Jah” "Digital Lifeforms"などのインダストリアル・ダブからダンス・オリエンテッド・テクノ、ハウス、エクスペリメンタル・エレクトロニカ、アンビエントなどを特徴とするキャバレー・ヴォルテールのリチャード・H・カークは常にイギリスでの先端音楽に関わり続けてきた。彼の音楽の主題や文体の根源は、新しい文脈での音楽をアフリカン、トライバル・パーカッションへ結合させシャーマニックな世界を構築することにある。イギリスの工業都市でありエレクトリック・ミュージックの発祥の地でもあるシェフィールドで生まれ育った彼の、80年代から90年代中期にかけてイギリスでのインダストリアル ( エレクトロニック ) ・ミュージック・シーンでの影響力とその存在感は計り知れないほど大きく重かった。
