フランク・ザッパは'40年にアメリカ、マリーランド州ボルティモアに生まれた。シシリーとギリシャ系の混血で貧しい中流階級の家庭に生まれ、'50年にカリフォルニアのモンテリーに家族全員が移り住み西海岸で育った。65-67年にマザー・オブ・インヴェンションでロスアンジェルスのウィスキー・ア・ゴーゴーや、ニューヨークのグリニッジブレッジのクラブで演奏していたの
FRANK ZAPPA / HOT RATS ( RS 6356 )
を、サイモン・アンド・ガーファンクルの " The Sound of Silence " や、ボブ・ディラン、アニマルス、ヴェルベット・アンダーグラウンドなどのレコード・プロデューサーだったトム・ウィルソンに見いだされ、2500ドルの契約金とレコーディングと編集に数カ月もの時間を費やして、'66年に " Freak Out " をリリースしアメリカ中にスキャンダラスな話題をふりまいて
いた。ボクが初めてザッパのレコードを聴いたのは、" Hot Rats " で、この作品が発表されたニッポンの60年代後半といえば、高度成長から安定成長へといたる加速する激動の時代の、'63年のケネディ大統領暗殺事件から、赤軍派の左翼的非日常性と、三島由起夫事件の右翼的日常性の2つが対峙するイデオロギーのなかにあって、それらのショッキングな惨劇の事件を、テレヴィのブラウン管のなかのリアルな映像として突きつけられ、ボクも芸能誌 " 平凡 " や " 明星 " で作られた虚像の新御三家で売り出され青春歌謡など歌っている場合じゃない、なにかしなければという焦りのようなものを感じていて、’69年に女性誌 " ヤングレディー" の社会班の記者鶴見氏に相談し、芸能界の虚像を暴露し10ページほどの造反記事を掲載していただき、第一共栄プロ/東芝EMIレコード専属で2年間いた芸能界を引退した。あの時代、フランク・ザッパのカリフォルニアのオンタリオの17歳の高校生たちの言動をテープにとったものを素材にした新しい時代の感情が歌われていた " Freak Out " や、すべてが規格品のように同じ顔を持ち、物質文明に冒された人間 ( プラスチック・ピープル ) を皮肉に歌い強烈に批判した " Absolutely Free " は、心情的にもボクの置かれていた状況とピッタリ共鳴していた。ベトナム戦争、マーチン・ルーサー･キング牧師やブラックパワーを唱えたマルコムXなどの人種差別、貧困にあえぐ黒人という病いも抱えてはいたが、60年代初期の豊かな国アメリカは若きケネディ、アポロ宇宙計画、テレビ文化、音楽、ファッション、ニューレフト（新左翼）など希望とエネルギーに溢れていた。それに反して60年代後半のアメリカは、ザッパ/マザー・オブ・インヴェンションの " Who needs the Peace Corps? " という曲が使われた Haxell Wexlerの映画 " Medium

Cool " にみられるように、反戦運動やヒッピーなどの現象が起こり一種の無政府状態で、どこか暗いイメージがつきまとっていて、ニッポンでの東京オリンピックと大阪万博に挟まれた高度成長期真っ只中の熱気とは裏腹に、なにか人間にとって大切なものが失われていく危機感のようなものを感じていた。60年代中期サンフランシスコを中心とするベイ・エリア一帯で起こったフラワームーブメントを皮切りに'69年のウッドストック・フェスティバルを頂点に起こったサイケデリック・ロック・ムーヴメントは、60年代中期−後期にはアメリカン・ロックの主流を占めブリティッシュ・ロック、ジャーマン・ロックにまで波及していき大きなうねりとなっていった。

初期のザッパの作品には西海岸のジャズ・ミュージシャンが多く関係していた。そしてキャプテンビーフハートのバイオリンとギター、1曲以外は全てがインストゥルメンタル、全体的にザッパ独特の猥雑さが感じられないシンプルで美しい曲が多いのだが、このアルバムが最初に聴いたこともあってかザッパの作品のなかで最も思い入れが強く、ボクのなかではやはりいまでもベストといえるかも。

ボクは熱狂的なザッパ・マニアではないので、正直ザッパ関係の作品が何枚でているのかも分からない。海賊盤なども数えれば200枚はあるかも。そのあたりは八木康夫氏にまかせることにして、個人的にはザッパと言えばマザース・オブ・インヴェンションで、60年代後半の " Freak Out " と " Absolutely Free " 、" Hot Rads " には人生を変えるほどの強烈な印象と思い出が残っていて、初期の作品にこだわり続けたい。欲を言えば'75年の " One Size Fits All " 、ザッパでは'78年の " Studio Tan " などの70年代後半までかな。レコード会社からサンプル盤を頂いていたので80年代の作品も聴いてはいたが、それほどの感情移入はできなかったというのが正直なところである。フランク・ザッパに関しては、その歌詞やバックを支えていた凄腕のミュージシャンのことなどなど色々書きたいことは山ほどあるのだが、今回はこれくらいで・・。 当時 " ジャズは失業の音楽だ " と皮肉をこめていったザッパ。それはいまも正解だ。最後にザッパの最もジャズに接近した作品だといわれている " The Grand Wazoo " に収録されていたジャズワルツ " Blessed Relief " を、皮肉をこめて。
