fifteen minutes " 通りに多くが有名になったとは言い難いが、そのなかでも小さな顔に通称”クレオパトラの目”と呼ばれた大きな瞳を持つEdie Sedgwick ( イーディ・セジウィック ) の存在はずば抜けていて、ポップ・カルチャー革命と60年代モードの象徴、時代を代表するイコンとなった。ジョン・ケイルが " 60年代後半の
ニューヨークはロック、ジャズ、実験音楽、演劇、フィルムなど色々なジャンルがそれぞれエネルギッシュでしかもお互いに交流があった時代だった。そのような時代はその後、見ていないし、当分ないかもしれない " と語っていた。ニューヨークの60年代は、まさに世界中の民族が住む都市、世界の縮図にふさわしい様々な文化が混合され特別に新しい空気が流れていたようだ。カリフォルニアのサンタバーバラの名家、セジウィック家の8人兄弟の7番目の子供として生まれたイーディは、 厳格な家庭環境や兄の自殺の影響からか少女の頃から常に精神的に不安定な子供で精神病院の入退院を繰り返していた。しかしどこかにひとを惹き付ける不思議な魅力を持っていて、周囲の友人や大人たちを虜にしていたという。美術に興味を持っていたイーディは、マサチューセッツ州のケンブリッジからマンハッタンに移り住み、'65年ニューヨークでアンディ・ウォーホルと運命的に出逢い彼の映画 " チェルシー・ガール" 、 " ビニール" などで主演し、ヴォーグやライフ誌にユース・クエイカーとして取り上げられ'65年のガールズ・オブ・イヤーに選ばれている。「彼女はいつも人生を追いかけていた、でも人生は彼女の思い通りには進んでくれなかった ( ダイアナ・ヴリーランド ) 」 、 「彼女はいつもどこかに出て行こうとしていた。いいムードのパーティの時だってそうなんだ。イーディはいつもそんな感じ。次に何が起きるか、それを待っていられなかった ( アンディ・ウォーホル ) 」 という言葉通りのその奔放さと破天荒な性格と言動は、なにをしてもイーディーの心を満たすことができなかった。'71年、睡眠薬やドラッグの摂取過多によって身体はボロボロになっていて体調を崩し28歳の若さで死去している。

FACTORY GIRL
2006年にロサンジェルスで初演されたジョージ・ヒッケンルーパー監督の映画 " Factory Girl " は、アンディ・ウォーホルのスタジオ" Factory " を舞台に、Edie Sedgwick ( イーディ・セジウィック ) のドラッグに蝕まれた悲劇的な28年の人生を描いたもので、ウォーホルのミューズ ( ファム・ファタル ) のように溺愛されていた彼女が、ボブ・ディランとの付き合いを始めた頃からその関係がギクシャクし始め、その頃ウォーホルは、イーディに変わるファクトリーの新しいスター、ニコやイングリッド・スーパースターの出現もあり、2人の関係は悪化していく過程が、ドキュメンタリー・タッチで克明に描かれている。時を同じくしてファクトリーの常連となっていたヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドの、アンディー・ウォーホルがプロデュースしたヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドの1枚目の " Velvet underground & Nico " が発表された背景には、こうした人間模様があったのだ。

THE VELVET UNDERGROUND
'65年にニューヨークのグリニッジ・ヴィレッジで、ルー・リード、ジョン・ケイル、スターリング・モリスン、モーリン・タッカーの4人で結成されたフォーリング・スパークス ( 名前の由来はサゾ・マゾのペーパーバックから採用 ) は、'66年にニューヨークのカフェ・ビザールに出演していた彼らを、店に入り浸っていた女流映画作家、バーバラ・ルービンが発掘し、そこから
ウォーホルのキャンプ仲間、ジェラード・マランガがウォーホルに紹介したという経緯がある。フォーリング・スパークスというバンド名がウォーホルの意見を取り入れてヴェルヴェット・アンダーグランドに変更されたのはファクトリーに彼らが入り浸っていた頃で、そこに映画 " チェル
シー・ガール " に出演していたニコを加え、ドムというディスコで催されたアンディ・ウォーホルの映像、ダンス、照明、SM演劇、ポエムなどが統合された3時間のサイケデリックなマルチメディア・ショー " Plastic Exploding Inevitable " の音楽を担当し、このショウが翌日の新聞の紙面を飾り、彼らの存在がにわかにクローズアップされ伝説となり、ウォーホルのプロデュースによる " The Velvet Underground and Nico " がリリースされたというわけである。ヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドの音楽の多くが、既成概念やモラルを変革するための異常性愛 、色情倒錯、麻薬、暴虐、死などをテーマに取り上げ、それこそマイノリティのワイルドサイドを歌ったものであった ( いまでは多くがノーマルな世界だが ) 。初期の彼らの音楽にジョン・ケイルの存在は大きく、ルー・リードの書く詩や曲やアイデアを具体的にアレンジして、あの独特のルーズで歪んだフィードバック・ギターのノイズが特徴のサウンドが生まれた。ヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドが残した作品は4枚で、2枚目の " ホワイトライト/ホワイトヒート" が実質上のファーストアルバムで暴力的なヒステリックな錯乱した世界が描かれている。3枚目の" " ザ・ヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンド" ではすでにジョン・ケールが脱退し、代わりにダグ・ユールが加入し、過去の暴力性は影を潜めルー・リードの毒を包み込んだ繊細な内面を赤裸々に歌っている。4枚目の " ローデッド" は、この作品が発売されるときにルー・リードはソロ活動するため、" 最高にいかしたポップソングを俺は置き土産にしていったんだから、それで充分だろう " というコメントを残しすでにバンドを脱退していた。残されたメンバーにより録音された音源を編集し、なんとか完成にこぎつけたという曰く付きの作品である。 " スウィートジェーン " がいまも名曲の輝きを放ち続けている。

ヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドには好きな曲は多いが、そのなかでも " The Black Angel’s Death Song " と " venus in furs " が最も印象に残っていて、'67年の4月にニューヨークのScepter Studiosで録音された " The Black Angel’s Death Song "を支配するジョン・ケイルのエレクトリック・ヴィオラと、途中でシュとマイクロフォンを吹き付けるかのような声音が、ストイックな彼らの音楽を象徴していて、これこそがヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドの飛び切りおいしい、毒を喰わらば皿までだ。ヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドとは、やはりルー・リードとジョン・ケイルと、アフリカン・ドラムに影響を受けたバス・ドラムを手やスティックで叩き、ハイハットを殆ど使用しない独自のドラミング・スタイルを持っていた女性パーカッショニストのモーリン・タッカー、付け加えるならニコの魂の結晶だったと思う

'70年の夏、Mickey Ruskinが経営するレストラン・ナイトクラブ " マックス・カンザスシティ " の専属バンドだったヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンド、その時期のライヴが収録されたもので構成された2枚組。'76年の夏に2ヶ月ニューヨークとロンドンに取材に出かけこのMax's Kansas CityやCBGBに毎晩のように出かけてまだ無名だったトーキング・ヘッズやテレヴィジョンなどのステージをみたり取材したりしていた。当時ニューヨークの音楽はマックス・カンザスシティよりもブリッカー通りの東端のボウリー315番地のひなびた場所にあるCBGBにその拠点が移っていて、薄汚いその箱はニューヨーク・パンクの巣窟になっていた。

ヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドのアルバム" The Velvet Underground & Nico " と " " White Light/ White Heat " 、そして3枚目に収録されていた " Candy Says " という曲はやはりボクの世界観 / 音楽観の原点であり、80年代中期までのロックイディオムの中枢を占領していた。それはストイックでエキセントリックなアヴァンギャルド、モダニズム溢れた音楽として、なによりもカッコ良く、他人の持っているビートルズやローリング・ストーンズ以外のものへの差別化を図るために必要なものだった。しかしルー．リードの歌う存在の深層に眠る痛み、メランコリックな感情は、いまもボクの心を惹き付けて離さない。このニッポンではヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドの影を継承するものとしては、当時裸のラリーズがいた。70年代の頭に、大阪難波高島屋デパートのヤング向けの企画を全面的に任されていて、催し会場でのヤング・ヤング・バーゲンの企画/販促、婦人服売り場でのマンション・メーカーの導入、サテライト・スタジオの設置などを展開したが、そのひとつとしてローズシアターで裸のラリーズとエターナル・ウーム・デリラムのイヴェントをプロデュースし、水谷クンとはその後何度も会い短い間だったが関わりを持ったが、現在まで彼らを超えるバンドには残念なことに巡り会っていない。70年代初頭、ボクは現在のアメリカ村のど真ん中、炭谷町の中西ビル ( 当時は三角公園の前にLoopという喫茶店があるぐらいで、アメリカ村は静かな街だった ) に " I am a boy " というファッション・メーカーのアトリエ兼企画事務所を立ち上げ、ブティックに卸す男物仕立ての婦人服の量産/デザインをしたり、" one week shop " など様々なイヴェント企画を展開していた。オブジェ雑誌 " rock magazine " を創刊する5年も前のことである。

れる " Synthesis of Sympathometic Music " と呼ばれるアルバム" メタル・マシン・ミュージック " は、ニューヨークのアパートで4台のテープレコーダーを使って録音されジョン・ケイルの60年代現代音楽におけるドローンのアイデアと、John Cale、Angus MacLiseらがVelvet Undergroundに移行する前にブートレグで残した200枚限定のラ・モンテ・ヤング
の " Theater of Eternal Music " をソースに構築されたと言われている（ 音楽的にはメタル・マシーンとドローンは相容れないと思っているが、このアルバムは後に " The Dream Syndicate " として再発され、ジョン・ケイルやアンガス・マクリース以外にも、Terry Jennings、Marian Zazeela、Tony Conrad、Billy Name、Jon Hassell、Alex Deaなどのポスト・ジョン・ケージのノイズ・ミュージックを継承する若かりし頃の現代音楽家の名前がみられる ) 。一般的には、それまでのドラッグとデヴィアンス ( 逸脱，異常 )で塗り固められたルー・リードのイメージだが、彼の音楽や詩に影響を与えていたものは、そうしたアンディ・ウォーホルに影響された痕跡だけではなく、もうひとり'61年の秋にシラキュース大学に入学した時に、詩人で短編作家のデルモア・シュワルツ ( Delmore Schwartz ) に師事し創作文学を学んだことによる影響と、彼の文学にも描かれているユダヤ系アメリカ人として生まれたことによる疎外感と孤独感が彼の作品を支配していた。デルモア・シュワルツ

が24歳 ( '37年 ) の時に書いた " 夢の中で責任がはじまる ( In Dreams Begin Responsibilities and Other Stories ) " という短篇小説は、サイレント映画
の、自分の父と母が結婚する前のある日の光景を、夢でもみるように映画館で観ているという筋書きで、そのユダヤ移民とアメリカ国民とのどちらにも疎外感を持つアイデンティティーなき孤独な物語りが、当時の若者たちの気持ちを代弁しているとして一躍注目を浴びた。しかしデルモアは、非常に重症なアルコール中毒に悩まされながら、ニューヨークの安ホテル " Hotel Marlon " で暮らし、死後2日目に発見されるという無残な孤独死を迎えた。ルーにとっては、スピリチュアル・ゴッドファーザー、教師でもあり飲み友達でもあった彼を " He was the smartest, funniest, saddest person I'd ever met. He had a large scar on his forehead he said he got dueling with Nietzsche " と語り、その小説やシュワルトへのシンパシーを、 ザ・ヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンド・アンド・ニコのアルバムのなかで " European Son " という曲にして捧げている。
'42年、ロングアイランドのフリーポートで生まれたルー・リードは、大学卒業と同時にニューヨークに移り、'65年にジョン・ケイルらとヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドを結成し、4枚のアルバムをリリースした後、ソロ活動を始め痛ましい都市ニューヨークのアンダーグラウンドに住む極端な生活を営む者のダブー、ドラッグ、男娼、オーラル・セックスなどのワイルドサイドの現実を歌い続けた。まずルー・リードはデヴィッド・ボウイをプロデューサーに迎え自身の音楽をグラムロックのジャンルに移植することを試み、見事それに成功した。 " ヒッチハイクでマイアミからやってきたホリー ( Holly Woodlawn ) は道中で眉毛を抜き、臑毛を剃って女になった。秘密の部屋で愛されたクールなキャンディ ( Candy Darling ) はホモの天国ファイア・アイランドの小島からやってきた。リトル・ジョー ( Joe Dallesandro ) はニューヨークで男娼をしながら稼いでいた。サンフランシスコ出身の麻薬の売人シュガープラム・フェアリーは黒人の粗末な食べ物を求めて街角をうろついて、

ハーレムのアポロ劇場に行けば彼女に会える。ジャッキーは鱈腹喰って1日だけジェームス・ディーンを気取っている・・・ " などのファクトリーに出入りする5人の実在する性転換者たちを歌っている " “Walk on the Wild Side ” は、ルー・リードの数ある作品のなかでボクにとってはベストだ。この曲を支えるハービー・フラワーズ ( Herbie Flowers / 70年代半ばにTレックスを支えていた ) のコントラバスとエレクトリック・ベースによるベースラインと、フェイド・アウトに使われた英国ジャズ黄金期を支えたロニー・ロス ( Ronnie Ross ) のバリトン・サクソフォーンのジャズ・フィーリーング・アレンジがクールな物語り性を浮きだたせているし、ロックというジャンルを超越した作品だった。アルバム " Transformer " はネルソン・オルグレン ( Nelson Algren ) の'56年の小説 " A Walk on the Wild Side " に触発されたもので、舞台化されるはずだった未完の音楽ヴァージョンだったと、ルーは後に語っている。 " トランスフォーマーはウォーホルの世界を象徴している、馴染まない人間が変身し、内面の美しさを見せ始める。外見は奇妙に見え、エキセントリックでも。ルーが書いたのはファクトリーでの経験だ ( Lenny Kaye ) " 。 ボウイのグラムロックとウォーホルのファクトリー、ウィルアム・バロウズやギンズバーグの世界、そして音楽と芸術が融合したニューヨークでのリアルな人間模様が描かれたドキュメンタリー、アーバン・ブルースだった。70年代のルー・リードはペンの代わりにギターを持った小説家だったと、ボクは思っている。

2006年10月14-17日の4日間にベルリンのSt. Anns Warehouseで行われたライヴがDVDとしてWeinstein Companyから発表されている。このフィルムを撮影/制作したジョアンナ・シュナーベル ( Julian Schnabel ) はアメリカの画家/映画監督で、1996年の画家ジャン・ミッシェル・バスキアの伝記映画 " バスキア " や、2007年の" 潜水服は蝶の夢を見る " で有名。フルオーケストラと聖歌隊をバックにしたこの映像は、ステージのバックにはシュナベールの映画からのスチール写真、ルー・リードの歌詞などが映し出され、アルバム以上の物語り性を持つ一種のロックオペラのようだ。アントニー・アンド・ザ・ジョンソンズのアントニー・ヘガティが " Caroline Says " でルー・リードと一緒にヴォーカルをつとめているのも興味深い。

ブライアン・イーノのオブスキュア・レーベル " Discreet Music " がリリースされたのは'75年だった。そしてフリップ・イーノの" Evenig Star " もそうだった。ロック・イディオムが現代音楽やノイズの文脈へと必然的に侵入していったことを忘れてはいけない。ルー・リードの" Metal Machine Music " だってそうだろう。当時の鈍感なエセ・ロック・ファンは下らねえロンドン・パンクの乱痴気騒ぎに目を取られ、ジョン・ライドンのまねをすることはあっても、誰ひとり気付いてはいなかったのだ。ロック・マガジンに関わっていたスタッフですらそうだった。"Metal Machine Music " を再構築したDVD付きのZeitkratzer ( ツァイクラツァー ) とルー・リードのコラボレーションZeitkratzer feat.Lou Reed " METAL MACHINE MUSIC” が2007年にリリースされた。Reinhold Friedlのディレクションにより11人のメンバーからなるベルリンのジャーマン・インプロバイザー、アヴァンギャルド・オーケストラZeitkratzerと、サックス奏者ユーリッヒ・クリーガー ( Ulrich Kreiger ) が35年前の'75年のレコード音源からアンサンブルの譜面を起こし、ベルリンのオペラハウスで実現したものだが、21世紀の現代音楽/レフロフィールドとして再構築された素晴らしい出来上がりをみせていた。11人のツァイクラツァーのメンバーは、Burkhard Schlothauer ( violin ) 、Christian Messer ( viola ) 、Ulrich Maiss ( violoncello; ) 、Alexander Frangenheim ( contrabass ) 、Ulrich Krieger ( soprano and tenor saxophones ) 、Franz Hautzinger ( trumpet ) 、 Melvyn Poore ( tuba ) 、Reinhold Friedl ( piano ) 、Luca Venitucci ( accordion ) 、Adam Weisman ( percussion ) そしてソロ・ギターとしてLou Reedといった編成だ。

**Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music may be the most misunderstood work ever created by a popular musician. The original two record set, released in 1975, was mostly noise: feedback squalls, amplifier hums and the tortured screech of electronic gadgets. Directed by Reinhold Friedl, the 11-member ZEITKRATZER ensemble from Berlin gave Reed's album a thorough listen and and Ulrich Kreiger, the group's saxophon transcribed the sounds to create an acoustic music score for their ensemble to play live.

ヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンド4枚のアルバムをリリースした後、72年にアルバム" Lou Reed " でソロ・デビューしたルー・リードは、デヴィッド・ボウイとミック・ロンソンのプロデュースによるセカンド・アルバム " トランスフォーマー " をリリースし、シングル " Walk On The Wildside " がヒットした。そして '73年にアリス・クーパーのプロデューサーでもあったボブ・エズリンによる " Berlin " 、がリリースされる。このアルバムは添付された8ページのモノクロームの写真に添えられた歌詞に沿ってひとつのストーリーが流れる。 " ベルリンの壁にもたれて、　君は5フィート10インチ、素敵だった、蝋燭の焔と冷たいデュポネ、ぼくたちは小さなカフェで、ギターの音色に耳を傾けた、素敵だった、それは天国だった" 。その後、問題作だった " メタル・マシーン・ミュージック " を'75年に発表。辛口を言えばルー・リードの作品はここまでで完成されつくしてしまった。'74年の " サリー・キャント・ダンス" や'76年の " コニー・アイランド・ベイビー " などは駄作ではないが、" トランスフォーマー" や " ベルリン" を超えるものではなかった。82年には初期のドラッグとデヴィアンス ( 逸脱，異常 ) の世界を感じるブルー・マスク " を発表していたが、やはり佳作としか言いようがなかった。個人的には'89年の " New York " まで彼の音楽を聴いていたが、やはりデヴュー当時のルー・リードの世界を超える作品には巡り会えなかったし，いつの間にかボクのなかからルー・リードの存在は消えてしまっていた。しかし'85年以後は、反アパルトヘイトの " サン・シティ " や各種ベネフィット・プロジェクトへの 参加、90年にはチェコスロヴァキアのハヴェル大統領との会見、 '95年には映画 " ブルー・イン・ザ・フェイス / Blue In The Face " への出演、'97年には舞台演出家、ロバート・ウィルソンの現代オペラ " タイム・ロッカー " で音楽を担当するなど、幅広い分野でも活躍していた。

合田佐和子氏の線画がジャケットに使われたRCAの高橋明子氏が企画したニッポンだけでリリースされたベスト・アルバム。 " rock magazine " は創刊から15号まで合田さんの既存の油絵や、特別に描いてもらった線画、16号から30号までを鋤田正義氏の写真を表紙に使わせて頂いたが、特に合田さんの創刊号のルー・リードの" Transformer " のジャケット裏のKarl Stoekerの撮ったウォーホルのファクトリーに出入りしていたジョー・ダレッサンドロのジーンズにくっきりと浮き出た巨大なペニスを持つ写真と背景の流れ落ちる滝をコラージュした油絵は、インパクトが強かった。あれから30数年、あらゆる音楽を聴き、ここまで漂流してきたけれど、ボクの音楽原点はやはりジョン・ケイルが在籍していたヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドと、トランスフォーマー、ベルリン、メタル・マシーン・ミュージックまでのルー・リードだったのだと。

ベルリンの壁崩壊と比べると、あまりニュースでも取り上げないが、つい先日、今年の11月17日に、チェコとスロバキアのヴェルヴェット・リヴォルーション ( ビロード革命 ) の20周年を記念してプラハにある13世紀教会のセレブレーションで行われた席で、ルー・リードは500人の聴衆を前に、壮大なストリングス・アレンジされたオーケストラをバックに " Perfect Day " をソプラノ歌手ルネ・フレミングとともに歌っている。2002年8月13日にベルリンからブタペストに向かう旅の途中で、ロマネスク、ゴチック、ルネッサンス、アールヌーボーなど中世以後のすべての建築様式が現存しているプラハに1泊だけ立ち寄ったことがある。 '93年にチェコスロバキアは、チェコ共和国とスロバキアとに分かれ、チェコの首都プラハは、ライトアップされたカレル橋のうえでは多くのストリート・ミュージシャンたちがボクの知らない伝統的な民族音楽を演奏していたし、黄金の都、北のローマ、ヨーロッパの音楽学院、百塔の街、建築博物館の街と言われるほどに美しい街だった。この映像を観ていて、ヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドは、もうここまで来てしまったのだと、感慨深い。
