いまにして思えば気障なセリフである。ひとを一編の詩で目覚めさせられるものだろうか。否である。例え目覚めさせられることが可能だとしても、その後の、そいつの人生が、俗から聖へ通過儀礼し、一段上の覚醒した見者のように、一生生き続けることなど不可能に近い。みんな、そんな夢みたいなこと言って，裏切り、裏切られてき
たんだ。特にボクの人生上での苦い経験ではねw。ロックは，所詮、メタファのうえにメタファを重ね上塗りしただけの、青臭い文学のような代物だった。パティ・スミス・グループが'76年に発表した " Radio Ethiopia " は、後半生をエチオピアで送った19世紀のフランスの詩人アルチュール・ランボー ( Jean Nicolas Arthur Rimbaud ) へのオマージュのような作品で、19世紀後半、ヴェルレーヌとの愛の放蕩の終着駅には、ヴェルレーヌがランボーに拳銃を2発発砲し、うち1発がランボーの左手首に当り、ランボーは入院することになる。この別れの後に " 地獄の季節 " を記したランボーは、完成したばかりの " 地獄の季節 " を暖炉に投げ込み、武器商人になってヨーロッパから紅海、南アラビアのアデンやアビシニア（現在のエチオピア）のハラールなど中近東を放浪したという。ランボーのシチュエーショニスト的、1カ所に留まらない " おそるべき通行人 " としての生き様には、共感するが、詩作品など人生にとっては取るに足らないものだ。ボクがロックやパンクから逃走したのは、すべてとは言わないが、なによりもその " 文学くささ " が鼻についたからだ。特にそうした音楽を支持し群がっていたロック・ファンという存在には・・。嘘ばっかし。もし、パンクやロックが今も顕在で、そうじゃないというなら、あの頃、ボクやロックの周辺にいた文学少年や少女たちは、どこに消えたというのだ。まあ、彼らが幸せになってさえいれば、どうでもいいけど・・。人生で最も大事なものは、なにを語ったか、なにを書いたかではなく、どう生きるか、 " おそるべき通行人 " としての生き様をしめすことだけだ。さて、パティ・スミスはミュージシャンではない。クイーン・オブ・パンクと呼ばれる詩人だ。ボブ・ディランと同じようなロックと詩を融合させたニューヨークの桂冠詩人だ。彼女のポエトリーディングのフリーフォーム・エクスペリメンタリズムと呼ばれる構造は、ビート詩人のものだが、当時ニューヨークのCBGBで見たステージは、まるで呪文を送り続ける両性具有のシャーマンのようでもあった。

パティ・スミス ( Patti Smith ) は4人兄妹の長女としてシカゴで生まれ、幼少の頃はウッドベリー、ニュージャージー、フィラデルフィアなど転々としている。アーサー・ランボーやボードレール、ヴェルレーヌ、そしてビートの詩に救いを見いだしたのは高校に通っていた頃だという。グラスボロ州のTeachers大学に通い始めたが、妊娠のために退学し堕胎した後は、工場の流れ作業に従事しお金を貯め、ニューヨークに移住し書店で働く。 後に彼女の恋人となりアルバム" Horses " ジャケット写真を撮ったロバート・メイペルソールには、その店で出会い、彼の住むチェルシー・ホテルで同棲しながら、アングラ演劇に関わるようになる。パティ・スミス・バンドのギタリストでもあり、ロック評論家のレニー・ケイと永遠のロックの愛を共有したのもこの70年代の頭で、現在まで彼女の詩人としての存在をささえている。パティ・スミスの作品にはいまも印象に強く残っている作品が多い。、75年、ジョン・ケイルのプロデュースによるファースト・アルバム" Horses " には、ニューヨークという都市の退廃を歌った " Birdland " や、ヴァン・モリソンが'64年にバンドThemのために書いた曲" Gloria " のヴァージョンが収録されていて、人々の罪のために十字架にかけられたイエス・キリストを讃えるキリスト教の典礼
（ミサ）に使われる声楽曲は、ドアーズのジム・モリソンへのオマージュでもあり、最も忘れられない1枚だが、やはり音楽的にはエアロスミスのプロデューサーでもあったジャック・ダグラスのプロデュースした " Radio Ethiopia " がベストと言えるだろう。パティ・スミスだったか、誰が言ったか忘れたが " 眠りについて、どこかほかの場所で目覚める夢をみるひとのためのアルバム " ，個人的には彼女の作品のなかではベストだが、78年発表のサード・アルバム " イースター " も、ブルース・スプリングスティーンとの共作 " ビコーズ・ザ・ナイト " のあのメロディのリフがいまも口をついて出てくるほどに捨て難い。90年代以後の、'94年に夫のフレッドが死去したことも、90年代後半から再び作品をリリースし始め、2007年には、初のカヴァー・アルバム " トゥウェルブ " を発表したことも、彼女のことはまるで無関心だったので知らないが、2008年 写真家のスティーヴン・セブリングが、11年間パティを密着して撮影したドキュメンタリー映画 " ドリーム・オブ・ライフ " をYoutubeで観て、その顕在ぶりは確認していた。そこにはやはりパティ・スミスのアルチュール・ランボーの " 地獄の季節 - Une Saison en Enfer ” を朗読するシーンが収められている。あれから35年、そういえばパティ・スミスが支持していた13歳でヘロイン中毒となった自身を題材にした '95年にレオナルド・ディカプリオ主演で映画化された" バスケットボール・ダイアリーズ " で有名な詩人、作家、ミュージシャンのジム・キャロル ( Jim Carroll ) も、去年の9月11日にマンハッタンの自宅で他界している。パティ・スミスは彼の死について次のようなコメントを寄せていた " 彼に会ったのは70年、もうそのときには世界的にとても有名で、彼の世代で最高の詩人として認知されていた。彼の作品は洗練されていてエレガントだった。彼には〈美〉が感じられた " と。ひとはなぜ亡くなったひとのことは悪く言わないのだろう。今日もまた、ボクの知人でひとりの元パンクスだった男が、美しさだけを追い求め続け、結局この世で何も成し遂げられないまま静かに不様に息を引き取った。あの頃のパンクスたちも、もうそんな歳なんだ。生きるとは不運を避け、いかに死なないで勝手気侭でいられるか、それだけだ。" 人生は人が自らデザインする冒険だ。そして運命や一連の幸運と不運な出来事に邪魔される " 。詩や文学、彼らの発する美しいレトリックや言葉など、ひとときのナルシシズムに酔いはするものの、ボクの人生にとってはなんの足しにもならなかった。しかし，詩人であれなんであれ、社会や相手に向かって吐いた言葉は、常に自分に還ってくる。それが例え気軽に書き込んでるTwitter ( つぶやき ) であっても。くれぐれも、気を付けて。

79年の" Wave " を最後に’88年の " Dream Of Life " まで、パティ・スミスがレコード制作していないのは、おそらく子育てに忙しかったこともあるだろうが、パンクがあっという間に終焉してしまったことや、それ以上に、80年代というポッカリと穴のあいた空白の時代を象徴してもいるのだ。ところが実はその80年代の頭から後期までの空白の時代こそが、過剰なまでのレコードやCDが輩出されていた頃で、誰もがその多過ぎる情報に混乱させられ、その後の新しいクラブ・カルチャー時代、90年代に引き継がれる最も重要な音楽情報を見失っていた。ロックに呪縛されたままのニッポンの音楽業界や音楽ジャーナリズム、音楽ファンがここですべてが淘汰され、いまも新しい時代へと、前進することができなくなったというわけさ。詩人として生きるならまだしも、40歳を過ぎたというのに、未だにパンクやノイズ、ロック・ミュージックを演奏しているミュージシャンなんて、すべて芸人だよ。正直88年の " Dream Of Life " なんて、買ってはみたが、ボクは最後まで聴いてられなかったよ。
