fifteen minutes " 通りに多くが有名になったとは言い難いが、そのなかでも小さな顔に通称”クレオパトラの目”と呼ばれた大きな瞳を持つEdie Sedgwick ( イーディ・セジウィック ) の存在はずば抜けていて、ポップ・カルチャー革命と60年代モードの象徴、時代を代表するイコンとなった。ジョン・ケイルが " 60年代後半の
ニューヨークはロック、ジャズ、実験音楽、演劇、フィルムなど色々なジャンルがそれぞれエネルギッシュでしかもお互いに交流があった時代だった。そのような時代はその後、見ていないし、当分ないかもしれない " と語っていた。ニューヨークの60年代は、まさに世界中の民族が住む都市、世界の縮図にふさわしい様々な文化が混合され特別に新しい空気が流れていたようだ。カリフォルニアのサンタバーバラの名家、セジウィック家の8人兄弟の7番目の子供として生まれたイーディは、 厳格な家庭環境や兄の自殺の影響からか少女の頃から常に精神的に不安定な子供で精神病院の入退院を繰り返していた。しかしどこかにひとを惹き付ける不思議な魅力を持っていて、周囲の友人や大人たちを虜にしていたという。美術に興味を持っていたイーディは、マサチューセッツ州のケンブリッジからマンハッタンに移り住み、'65年ニューヨークでアンディ・ウォーホルと運命的に出逢い彼の映画 " チェルシー・ガール" 、 " ビニール" などで主演し、ヴォーグやライフ誌にユース・クエイカーとして取り上げられ'65年のガールズ・オブ・イヤーに選ばれている。「彼女はいつも人生を追いかけていた、でも人生は彼女の思い通りには進んでくれなかった ( ダイアナ・ヴリーランド ) 」 、 「彼女はいつもどこかに出て行こうとしていた。いいムードのパーティの時だってそうなんだ。イーディはいつもそんな感じ。次に何が起きるか、それを待っていられなかった ( アンディ・ウォーホル ) 」 という言葉通りのその奔放さと破天荒な性格と言動は、なにをしてもイーディーの心を満たすことができなかった。'71年、睡眠薬やドラッグの摂取過多によって身体はボロボロになっていて体調を崩し28歳の若さで死去している。

FACTORY GIRL
2006年にロサンジェルスで初演されたジョージ・ヒッケンルーパー監督の映画 " Factory Girl " は、アンディ・ウォーホルのスタジオ" Factory " を舞台に、Edie Sedgwick ( イーディ・セジウィック ) のドラッグに蝕まれた悲劇的な28年の人生を描いたもので、ウォーホルのミューズ ( ファム・ファタル ) のように溺愛されていた彼女が、ボブ・ディランとの付き合いを始めた頃からその関係がギクシャクし始め、その頃ウォーホルは、イーディに変わるファクトリーの新しいスター、ニコやイングリッド・スーパースターの出現もあり、2人の関係は悪化していく過程が、ドキュメンタリー・タッチで克明に描かれている。時を同じくしてファクトリーの常連となっていたヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドの、アンディー・ウォーホルがプロデュースしたヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドの1枚目の " Velvet underground & Nico " が発表された背景には、こうした人間模様があったのだ。

'65年にニューヨークのグリニッジ・ヴィレッジで、ルー・リード、ジョン・ケイル、スターリング・モリスン、モーリン・タッカーの4人で結成されたフォーリング・スパークス ( 名前の由来はサゾ・マゾのペーパーバックから採用 ) は、'66年にニューヨークのカフェ・ビザールに出演していた彼らを、店に入り浸っていた女流映画作家、バーバラ・ルービンが発掘し、そこから
ウォーホルのキャンプ仲間、ジェラード・マランガがウォーホルに紹介したという経緯がある。フォーリング・スパークスというバンド名がウォーホルの意見を取り入れてヴェルヴェット・アンダーグランドに変更されたのはファクトリーに彼らが入り浸っていた頃で、そこに映画 " チェル
シー・ガール " に出演していたニコを加え、ドムというディスコで催されたアンディ・ウォーホルの映像、ダンス、照明、SM演劇、ポエムなどが統合された3時間のサイケデリックなマルチメディア・ショー " Plastic Exploding Inevitable " の音楽を担当し、このショウが翌日の新聞の紙面を飾り、彼らの存在がにわかにクローズアップされ伝説となり、ウォーホルのプロデュースによる " The Velvet Underground and Nico " がリリースされたというわけである。ヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドの音楽の多くが、既成概念やモラルを変革するための異常性愛 、色情倒錯、麻薬、暴虐、死などをテーマに取り上げ、それこそマイノリティのワイルドサイドを歌ったものであった ( いまでは多くがノーマルな世界だが ) 。初期の彼らの音楽にジョン・ケイルの存在は大きく、ルー・リードの書く詩や曲やアイデアを具体的にアレンジして、あの独特のルーズで歪んだフィードバック・ギターのノイズが特徴のサウンドが生まれた。ヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドが残した作品は4枚で、2枚目の " ホワイトライト/ホワイトヒート" が実質上のファーストアルバムで暴力的なヒステリックな錯乱した世界が描かれている。3枚目の" " ザ・ヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンド" ではすでにジョン・ケールが脱退し、代わりにダグ・ユールが加入し、過去の暴力性は影を潜めルー・リードの毒を包み込んだ繊細な内面を赤裸々に歌っている。4枚目の " ローデッド" は、この作品が発売されるときにルー・リードはソロ活動するため、" 最高にいかしたポップソングを俺は置き土産にしていったんだから、それで充分だろう " というコメントを残しすでにバンドを脱退していた。残されたメンバーにより録音された音源を編集し、なんとか完成にこぎつけたという曰く付きの作品である。 " スウィートジェーン " がいまも名曲の輝きを放ち続けている。

ヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドには好きな曲は多いが、そのなかでも " The Black Angel’s Death Song " と " venus in furs " が最も印象に残っていて、'67年の4月にニューヨークのScepter Studiosで録音された " The Black Angel’s Death Song "を支配するジョン・ケイルのエレクトリック・ヴィオラと、途中でシュとマイクロフォンを吹き付けるかのような声音が、ストイックな彼らの音楽を象徴していて、これこそがヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドの飛び切りおいしい、毒を喰わらば皿までだ。ヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドとは、やはりルー・リードとジョン・ケイルと、アフリカン・ドラムに影響を受けたバス・ドラムを手やスティックで叩き、ハイハットを殆ど使用しない独自のドラミング・スタイルを持っていた女性パーカッショニストのモーリン・タッカー、付け加えるならニコの魂の結晶だったと思う

'70年の夏、Mickey Ruskinが経営するレストラン・ナイトクラブ " マックス・カンザスシティ " の専属バンドだったヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンド、その時期のライヴが収録されたもので構成された2枚組。'76年の夏に2ヶ月ニューヨークとロンドンに取材に出かけこのMax's Kansas CityやCBGBに毎晩のように出かけてまだ無名だったトーキング・ヘッズやテレヴィジョンなどのステージをみたり取材したりしていた。当時ニューヨークの音楽はマックス・カンザスシティよりもブリッカー通りの東端のボウリー315番地のひなびた場所にあるCBGBにその拠点が移っていて、薄汚いその箱はニューヨーク・パンクの巣窟になっていた。

ヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドのアルバム" The Velvet Underground & Nico " と " " White Light/ White Heat " 、そして3枚目に収録されていた " Candy Says " という曲はやはりボクの世界観 / 音楽観の原点であり、80年代中期までのロックイディオムの中枢を占領していた。それはストイックでエキセントリックなアヴァンギャルド、モダニズム溢れた音楽として、なによりもカッコ良く、他人の持っているビートルズやローリング・ストーンズ以外のものへの差別化を図るために必要なものだった。しかしルー．リードの歌う存在の深層に眠る痛み、メランコリックな感情は、いまもボクの心を惹き付けて離さない。このニッポンではヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドの影を継承するものとしては、当時裸のラリーズがいた。70年代の頭に、大阪難波高島屋デパートのヤング向けの企画を全面的に任されていて、催し会場でのヤング・ヤング・バーゲンの企画/販促、婦人服売り場でのマンション・メーカーの導入、サテライト・スタジオの設置などを展開したが、そのひとつとしてローズシアターで裸のラリーズとエターナル・ウーム・デリラムのイヴェントをプロデュースし、水谷クンとはその後何度も会い短い間だったが関わりを持ったが、現在まで彼らを超えるバンドには残念なことに巡り会っていない。70年代初頭、ボクは現在のアメリカ村のど真ん中、炭谷町の中西ビル ( 当時は三角公園の前にLoopという喫茶店があるぐらいで、アメリカ村は静かな街だった ) に " I am a boy " というファッション・メーカーのアトリエ兼企画事務所を立ち上げ、ブティックに卸す男物仕立ての婦人服の量産/デザインをしたり、" one week shop " など様々なイヴェント企画を展開していた。オブジェ雑誌 " rock magazine " を創刊する5年も前のことである。
