波発振器から奏でられる電子音楽とミュージックコンクレートのなんと新鮮なことよ。当時こうした音響は最初ラジオやテレビ、劇場用のサウンドトラック/バックグラウンドミュージック、コマーシャルとして使われ、その後ジャック・クレイトン ( Jack Clayton ) の1961年のスリラー映画用電子音や、作曲家テイアー・マスグレーヴ ( Thea Musgrave ) や Ivor Walsworth
とのオペラの共同作業を含む作品などへと発展していった。Wire誌はThe Sounds Of New Atlantisと題してOramicsの背後にある英国の開発途上の電気音響学の音楽および無線電話機の芸術、BBCにおける役割、音技術のスタジオ作品および開発、デザインおよび構造と力と同時に、ダフニ・オラムの音の物理的・形而上の様相を一致させるにあたっての進歩や癒し回復の力、インスピレーションなどについてプレゼンしている。
50年代の電子音楽とイギリスの２人の女性作曲家、ダフニ・オラム( Daphne Oram )や、ロン・グレーナー ( Ron Grainer ) のSFテレビ・シリーズDoctor Whoのテーマ音楽で有名なデリア・アン・ダービシャー ( Delia Ann Derbyshire ）のミュージックコンクレート、シンセサイザー・インストゥルメントを聴いているとラジオとテレビから流れるホワイトノイズすらもまだ新鮮に感じたあの50年代独特の、エレクトロニクス音楽の匂いや色彩が立ち現れる。余談だが、ダービシャーの死後、267本のオープンリール式のテープおよび無数の書類の1つの箱が、彼女の屋根裏で見つけられたという。ほとんどすべては2006年にディジタル化されたが、どれもまだ公表されていないという。時代の要請を受けてこれらも近いうちに発表されるだろう。

Deluxe quadruple vinyl comes in a gatefold edition, including 46 previously unheard recordings from the founder of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, remastered and cut at D&M in Berlin Two years in the making, this 46 track deluxe 4LP edition features two and a half hours of previously unreleased recordings from Daphne Oram’s archives. None of this material has ever been available before and has been painstakingly compiled and restored from over 400 tapes before being mastered at Dubplates & Mastering and cut at 45RPM for extra depth. Daphne Oram, founder of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, died in 2003 leaving a colossal archive of reel-to-reel tapes and documents behind. This important collection of material eventually made its way to Goldsmiths College, London, who have been administering it on behalf of the Daphne Oram Trust for the last few years. The collection holds over 400 tapes made by Oram during her lifetime, and 211 of those have been archived and catalogued by the college so far. “The Daphne Oram Tapes: Volume One” is the result of almost two years spent trawling through the archive in an attempt to piece together a coherent document of one of the most pioneering and genuinely experimental characters in electronic music history. Although some of Oram’s recordings have surfaced on the “Oramics” compilation, this set reveals a much more complex, dark, sometimes disturbing and often beautiful body of work which has, until now, been partially obscured by the more recognisable Radiophonic bleeps and whirrs the Workshop is best known for. This first volume focuses on Oram’s love of experimental forms, of Musique Concrète, of the science and mystery of sound and composition. It comes at a time when her work is only just starting to gain wider acknowledgment in scholarly as well as popular circles. The “Oramics” machine (the first electronic musical instrument in history to be designed and built by a woman) has gone on display at the Science Museum in London, an important step in what will no doubt be a sustained effort to assert Oram’s rightful position as one of the most important figures in modern music. Working through the archive has been a lifechanging experience, revealing a wealth of musical treasures that include recordings and sound effects made for ‘2001’ and Jack Clayton’s “the Innocents”, all the way through to field recordings made in Africa. This first volume, put together with the help of Goldsmiths and Daphne’s family, is the first in a planned series that will, for the first time, make Oram’s most important and personal recordings available for public consumption.

Sorry about the quality but I thought it was worth uploading as I can't see this footage anywhere on YouTube right now.
This is a short extract from a UK BBC programme (originally broadcast on 3rd August 1969) about experimental electronic music featuring Daphne demonstrating the Oramics machine. If you are fan of early electronic music you will be aware of the importance of this rare footage. The Oramics machine was discovered in a barn in France a few years ago and at the moment resides in the Science Museum in London.

Suum Cuique (pronouned Soom Kwi-Kwe, Latin for "To Each His Own") follows the remit of Young Americans to explore uncharted, experimental, and personal synthscapes, guided by the hand of intuition with an entirely analogue array of machines. There's a confidence and ability to these productions which elevates them above the masses of lo-fi synth meanderings currently murmuring in the underground, occupying the tantalising space between Eliane Radigue and James Ferraro, or Thomas Köner and Daphne Oram, creating a dialogue between their shared and opposing aesthetics to give an emotional response with deeply chilling and engrossing results. In 'Lithic Reduction' concrète textures grind like a millstone to release powdery clouds of analog dust, settling only to be dispersed by gusts of blackened distortion, whereas 'Red Binary' is distinctly electronic, revolving around muted radar bleeps like the resonance from SAW II soundtracking a speckly pill experience that's starting to go west. The album's centrepiece, the aptly titled 'Entropy' nods to the sublimely stoic work of Eleh, radiating microtonal bass shifts while a bitter northerly wind builds in intensity. Brilliantly out of place, 'Cyclic Redundancy' opens the flipside with a majestically submerged slab of completely obliterated and submerged 4/4, like an unholy collusion between Mika Vainio, Sandwell and Bernard Parmegiani soundtracking a trade union rave in the 1950's, before 'Even In Death...' conjures imagery of a eulogy given by a Mongolian throat singer with crows circling overhead. Strictly limited copies, catch it while you can.

さて今年もあと2週間で終わる・・・・・・・・・・・
東日本大地震と放射線/セシウム汚染に塗れたとんでもない一年だったな。
それもまだ終息 ( 収束 ? ) したわけではなく、来年はもっと悲劇的に自覚症状が顕現してくるのだろう。食物や飲料水から来る内部被曝や、大きな地震もまだ起こるっていうしね。
深夜の都会を歩いてごらん、週末といえど、ものの見事に人の気配がしなくなった。風営法を持ち出すまでもなく、今時アゲアゲのテクノダンシングじゃねえだろう。先端音楽はいまもそのアポカリプティック世界を歌い続けている。

ボク周辺の出来事と言えばremodelレーベルを立ち上げたことくらいかな、
誤解されているので言っておくが、このプロジェクトにボクはプロデューサー/イメージデザイナーとして関わっただけで、すべてのディレクションと運営はスタジオワープがされていること。スペインのSemanticaのPrologue / Various Artists Compilation ( remodel 02 ) もオーガナイズしたけれど、実際にCDは店頭に並んでいるのかな・・？。それすらわからないw。
まあ、そういうわけで、remodel recordsも立ち上げただけのことで、その後の動きはさっぱり・・・。いまはよほど力あるパブリシティと動きをとらなきゃ、リリースしたからってそれだけのことに過ぎない。300枚や500枚プレスしたからって制作費を考えれば、自己満足か、ボランティアのようなもの。届けたいひとに届けられさえしたら、それでパーフェクト。
スタジオワープとは、来年の春までに約束のモーマスのアルバムをプロデュースしてとりあえずこのプロジェクトは終わりにしたい。

来年はそれこそすべてのことを緻密に計画し、覚悟してかからなきゃな、と思っています。

Will Bankhead’s simple graphics and covers for Honest Jon’s, Doldrumsand Mo Wax are the stuff of legend. Starting out as one of the mainvisual directors behind the Mo Wax alongside Ben Drury, Swifty
and Futura 2000, he crafted some of the most memorable packages of mid-’90s dance music, drawing initial inspiration from skate magazineslike Transworld Skateboarding and Thrasher. Bankhead’s major labelaffiliation since has been Honest Jon’s, marked by his simple, cleandesigns and often consisting of archival material. Vladislav Delay Quartet:
Finnish experimental artist Sasu Ripatti, most often known as Vladislav Delay, has put together a new group called the Vladislav Delay Quartet, with a self-titled debut album due out in May 2011.
Ripatti has always been a man of many projects, producing on his own as Vladislav Delay, Luomo, Uusitalo and Sistol, with each guise differing greatly in style. Not much is known about the sound of his new group, but it has at least a few things in common with the Moritz von Oswald Trio: both are released through Honest Jon's Records and feature an electro-acoustic ensemble with Ripatti on percussion.
Other members of the line-up are Sähko mainstay Mika Vainio, who handles electronics and processing, and live instrumentalists Derek Shirley and Lucio Capece (the latter of whom appeared on the Vladislav Delay's 2009 album "Tummaa"). Those two play double bass, bass clarinet and soprano sax.
The album is mixed and produced by Ripatti himself. Artwork is arranged by Will Bankhead, with an original piece by Katharina Immekus.
The Color of Pomegranates (Armenian: Նռան գույնը, Nran guyne) is a 1968 film directed by Sergei Parajanov and is a biography of the Armenian ashug Sayat Nova (King of Song) that attempts to reveal the poet's life visually and poetically rather than literally. The film depicts the poet's coming of age, discovery of the female form, falling in love, entering a monastery and dying, all framed through both Sergei Parajanov's imagination and Sayat Nova's poems. Actress Sofiko Chiaureli notably plays six roles in the film, both male and female.

ビエントが収録されていて、ノイズとニューウェイヴの原型がリモデルされ再現されている。この堕落しきったクラブカルチャー ( ディスコならまだしもクラブカルチャーなどいまや死語だ。いったいどこにあるの？ ) や旧態依然としたテクノの文脈を見限り、ニューウェイヴもポストパンク、インダストリアル・ミュージックすらも知らない彼らが、こうした動向80年代音楽の文脈へと戻ろうとしていることはとても興味深い。2012年の年明けを前にしてディスコにおけるハウスやテックハウス、ビートやレイヴやドラムンベースなどアゲアゲダンスミュージック ( パーティミュージック) としてのテクノは完璧に終焉した。
インダストリアルミュージックとはなにを意味していたのか、81年、ボクはrock magazineの第35号でまる一冊工業神秘主義音楽の特集を組み、ロンドンに住む羽田明子にインダストリアル・レコードを立ち上げ、インダストリアル・ミュージックという言葉を最初に使ったスロッビンググリッスルのジェネシス・P・オリッジのインタヴューを依頼し掲載した。そこでインダストリアルミュージックの本来意味するものがジェネシス・P・オリッジによって明確に語られている。「 現代の経済、社会的業務状況に関連した名前が欲しかった。ノスタルジアやリズム&ブルース、黒人音楽のルーツに反対する名前が欲しかった。サイファイのような宇宙的感情は抜きで、大量生産やテクノロジーに関連したもの。一口で言えば特有なもの。また私たち自身の個人的な芸術的素性を忘れぬようにアートを示唆しレコードに情報の貯蔵や非個人的な組織による加工といった感覚をほのめかすことのできるような名前があればと望んでいた。アンディ・ウォーホルとも関連づけようとファクトリー・レコードという名前も思いついたが、あまりにも見えすいていて，特定に限られていて・・・。ピーター・クリストファーソンがインダストリアル・レコードという名を提案し、この名前が私たちの望んでいた局面を全て含んでいることは明らかだった。電気増幅された音楽を奴隷時代の農民ブルースから工業革命の起こった戸口へ、現在の私たちの暮らしている不快な、ひどく困難な時代へとひきづりだすこと・・・。ロンドンを訪れていたモンテ・カザザが〝インダストリアル・ミュージック・フォー・インダストリアル・ピープル〟というスローガンを考え出した。それ以来インダストリアル・ミュージックという言葉は世界中でモダーン・ミュージックのカテゴリーとして使われてきた( rock magazine / industrial mystery music 01- 1981 第35号 ) 」。

Real Name: David Sumner
Profile: One of techno's true underground heroes, Function, real name Dave Sumner, has been DJing and making music for over 15 years.
Hailing from New York, he was seduced by techno music when Jeff Mills held a residency (as well as his own first) at the Limelight in the early 90s. Dave started to produce music and from the mid-90s onwards, put out music on Damon Wild's Synewave and his own Infrastructure imprint.
Together with Karl O'Connor aka Regis he worked as Portion Reform, putting out uncompromising music on Downwards and becoming the only non-Birmingham producer to release on the label.
More recently, Dave moved to Berlin and, still working with O'Connor, set up the acclaimed Sandwell District imprint.

Compared often to the works of Maurizio (Moritz Von Oswald) or the Basic Channel releases, the humble composers Rod Modell and Mike Schommer offer a unique blend of dubby beats, crisp static, synthetic analog grooves, and of course lots of deep chords! Its worth noting that DeepChord is now only Rod Modell. (Edited)

Rod Model...
Rod Modell is a sound designer / electronic music producer from the Detroit area. Began producing music in the mid-80's using analog synthesizers and drum machines. To date (July 2007), Modell has about 60 releases to his credit. Rod's work was focused on elecrto-acoustic experimentation in the early years, making musique concrete compositions with a 4-track cassette machine and field recordings, then branching into industrial soundscape work.
More recent recordings utilize more structure and beats, but still retain the atmospherics that Modell is known for. Mood is of paramount importance in a Rod Modell recording (often created with field recordings). Sadly, this element seems to be lost in much of the clicks+cuts DSP music of today. One of Modell's favorite pastimes is making middle-of-the-night recordings with his portable DAT machine and dummy-head microphone.
In the mid-90's, Modell started Deepchord Records (w/ Mike Schommer) in Detroit, as an outlet for his music. Deepchord has experienced tremendous popularity (some say cult status) within the Dub Techno world. Formed in the mid-90's, DC was one of the original perveyors of this sound. Hordes of immitators came in the following years after DC, but DC's status as one of the originators is firmly embedded in musical history. Somewhat similar to the mid-90's Berlin sound, but with warmer sensibilites... seeming to pull more elements from Chicago's House and Detroit's Techno heritages, while avoiding Berlin's more metallic edge. Someone recently described Berlin's sound as Black and Grey, and DC's sound as Brown and Red. (Edited)
