DRAG - CHILLWAVE

ネットの時代に新しい音楽は、いままでのようにシーンから生まれ、その新しい情報が伝播/拡散していくのではなく、オンライン ( コンピュータ・ネットワーク ) から起こり、同様の音楽を作っている世界中の地理的に散在する顔を会わすことも無いアーティストの、実体のないゴーストのような集団によって生みだされる。そうした現象をシーンではなく " Drag " ( 抗力 ＝ ( 1 )物体が接触面に力を及ぼすとき、面から物体に働く力。面に垂直に働く成分と平行に働く成分とがあり後者は摩擦力という。(2)流体中を運動する物体に働く抵抗。多く航空力学で用いる。* 足･錨･鎖などが〉引きずられる ) " と呼んだのはoOoOOのクリストファー・デクスター・グリーンスパン ( Christopher Dexter Greenspan ) だが、そういえば百匹目の猿は、ネットの背後にウロウ

ロしてはいるが、それらがひとつの場に集うことは奇跡に近い。こうしたボクのブログでもヴィジターだけは毎日1500-2000ものカウントがあるのに、そのリアルな姿がみえないのと同じことだ。そして、もしシーンを形成したとしても、その時点でその音楽情報はすでに古くなっていて過去のものとも言える。ひとつの音楽を介在して、同じ価値観をある特定の場で共有する音楽コミュニケーションなんて、もはやないものと思わなきゃ、やってられない。最近ボクはgritchばかりを紹介しているが、決してそればかりではなく、先端の音楽でもうひとつ興味を持っているのが，この" drag " 、 " witch house "と呼ばれているスロウ・ムーヴィング・エレクトロ・ポップ ( slow-moving electro-pop ) だ。このぶつ切りにされたヒップホップのような音楽" drag " という言葉の起源は、ミシガンのバンドSALEMに由来するらしいが、そこにはdub、goth、current electro、ambient house ( Chill Out ) のスタイルが潜在的に刷り込まれていて、サイケで催眠性の不気味なポップ感覚のあるサウンドスケープが聴こえてくる。こうした音楽をすべてウィッチ・ハウスと呼ぶことに少々抵抗があり、個人的にはDrag/Chillwaveと呼びたい。DragのパイオニアとされるoOoOOの在籍するニューヨーク・ブルックリンのTri Angle、マンチェスターのレーベルModern LoveからのSean CantyとMiles WhittakerからなるDemdike Stareや、ドイツ、ハンブルグのPeter M. Kersten とDavid Lieskeによって1999年に設立されたポスト・ミニマリズムのDialレコードなども、Gold Panda、Oval、Four Tet以後のポストロックの現在進行形であるDragと呼ばれるジャンルに組込まれて当然だろう（ それぞれのレコード評、ドラッグ・ミュージックに関しての追記などは後日再アップします) 。

This trailer is a series of animations linking together the audio clips from Pantha Du Prince's forthcoming album, Black Noise.
The animations were created by Ashley Dean of Broken Pixel:
"Described by Pantha Du Prince as 'a frequency inaudible to man, something archaic and earthly, the calm before the storm', the phenomenon of Black Noise was as much of a challenge to render in visual media as it was to make an album that encapsulated this elusive substance. The central process used for the trailer was part mechanical automation, part digital archaeology; an excavation of still and moving images, looking beyond their native pixels into seams of solid colour and unstable shapes. The forms that were explored came from similar natural sources as the music, the harsh powers of wind and ice, the beauty of distant lightning and the comfort of warm, external rain.
And sometimes, the beats and rhythms of the music engulf and dictate the process. When the bass thumps at the diaphragm, kaleidoscopic waves and pounding concentric circles dominate the screen. When the treble glistens and the microsamples skip and tick, so do the visuals, using myriad techniques to distort and deconstruct once recognisable images.
The visualisation of sound is always a combination of personal expression and artistic expectation but when the music takes hold there is no other option but to let it show you what to do..."

Encoded " Basic Channel"

元パレ・シャンブルグ ( Palais Schaumburg ) のマウリツィオ・フォン・オズワルド ( Moritz Von Oswald ) とMark Ernestusによって'93年にベルリンで表出したテクノ・プロダクション" Basic Channel " に、クラブシーンは未だ呪縛されたままだ。いやクラブシーンというよりも、ボクの耳はこれらのクールでストイックでホログラフィー的なグルーヴを超えるサウンドに出会っていない。当時、ベーシック・チャンネルのレコードをすべて買ってはいたが、時々デトロイト・テクノのなかにやっとのことで彼らの12インチを繋ぐことが出来たが、ダビー、スクラッチー、ノイジー、ミニマルなベーシック・チャンネル・グルーヴをターンテーブルで構築 ( DJイング ) 可能になったのは、'95年に10数枚のレコードを残して彼らの活動が停止してからのことだった。正直
SVRECA / OBSCURE ( SEMANTICA 18V )
ベーシック・チャンネルがクラブシーンで認識され始めたのは、その10年後にカール・クレイグのPlanet Eレ−ベルで2枚の作品がリリースされてからのことだろう。ダブ処理されることによるフィルターがかかった音響やリズムのズレは、2つの空間周波数のうねりといえるモワレ ( 干渉縞 ) 現象を発生させる。ベーシック・チャンネルの持つグルーヴの特徴はすべてこれに集約される。透明のプレートに施された2組の平行模様を斜めに重ね合わせると、その交差部分が平行線の周期とは異なる縞模様になるように。ボクにとってのベーシック・チャンネルは倍音によって生まれる魔鏡のような、無いはずの像が反射した光の中で影として浮かび上がる世界だったかも。そうしたコード化が進行する" ベーシック・チャンネル" のミニマル・ダブの波は、いつの間にかクラブ系先端音楽の核を占領してしまっていて、それ以外のものは聴けたものじゃないほどディスコ化が進行してしまっているというのが現状かも。まるで80年代のジュリアナ再来wwwか。

**5日前に小冊子の編集も終わり印刷屋に版下を提出し、 " remodel " projectも，後は印刷の更正と、商品見本としての " a sign - paria- ozaka - kyoto " の出来上がりを待つだけだ。glitchからwhitchまでを横断した今回のコンパイルは、来年の2月にドイツのA-Musik、Kompostや、ニューヨークのForced Exposure、サンフランシスコのAquarius Records、フランスのMetamkine、Bimbo Towerなどの流通システムを使って世界に配信予定だ。海外のアーティストに引けを取らない作品としてコンパイルした自信だけはある。このstudio warpとのプロジェクトの動きを止めることなく，来年は毎月100部限定でもいいからニッポンの若いミュージシャンやニューメディア・アートのアーティストを発掘してCDやDVDを乱発するほどに活性化させていきたい気持ちもあるし (キミがこのremodelレーベルの動きに興味を持つミュージシャンやニューメディア・アートのアーティストなら是非ボクやnu thingsに連絡して欲しい ) 、70-80年代に出版したrock magazineやEGOなどをリエディトし直して、夏までには500ページほどの出版物も発行する事も決まっているし、vanity recordsの再発も準備中である。さて、今日はもうクリスマス・イヴか・・。明日25日のBricolage vol.8は、今年発売されたレコードばかりでDJイングし、新しい時代意識を構築するのと、クリスマス・ムードたっぷりに楽しく忘年会気分で展開しようと思っています。話す時間もたっぷりありますので、ぜひ顔みせてください。ウィリアム・バロウズの短編映画 " Junky's Christmas " のような熱烈に贅沢なメランコリックな時間を・・。

スペインのレーベル・SEMANTICAは、Vladislav DelayやEd Chamberlain、Oscar Mulero、Jimmy Edgar 、Svreca 、Arcanoidなど、カセット・テープや100枚ハンドメイドプリント・ジャケットの12インチなど極限定作品をリリースしている。これはレーベル主宰者・Svrecaの作品で、T++(MONOLAKE)に捧げられたフューチャリスティック・ミニマルダブ " Erosion " などが収録されたもの。少々インダストリアルな匂いのするミニマルダブではある。他には " Tommy Vicananza " というタイトルの7インチ・シングルなどの作品も発表している。

スウェーデンのプロデューサー Anders Ilar のアルバム "Vidare" 。Anders Ilar は、これまでにも Shitkatapult や Echocord、Level Records などのレーベルからリリースを重ね、2008年には来日してもいる。 "Vidare" は2000年頃に制作した未発表音源を編集したもので、エレクトロニカやミニマルダブが18曲収録されている。他にもPrescription、Future Vision、Underground QualityなどのUSディープ・ハウス・レーベルからも作品をリリースし、黒人ギャラクティック・ディープ・ハウサーと呼ばれているらしい。

Donato Dozzy - Polarity EP

イタリアン・ミニマルダブのプロデューサー、Panorama BarのレジデントDJ、Donato Dozzyのカセットテープで100本限定リリースされていた作品が、シアトルのDJ・Chloe Harris が主宰するカセット・テープを主としたレーベルFurther Recordsからヴァイナル・アルバム・リリースされた。彼の音楽をマイクロ・トランスと自ら名付けている。このFurther Recordsの12インチはすべてハンドメイドのシルクスクリーン仕様のジャケットで、少々アナクロっぽいが、ロサンジェルのJesselisa & Matthew davidが設立したLeaving Recordsなど、最近はこうした超マイナーなアンダーグラウンド・レーベルからの50-100枚程度に限定発売される音楽に最も感動させられる。それに彼らは自由にMP3sでダウンロード可能な音楽をデジタル配送/提供していたりしていて、過去のインディペンデント・レーベルにみられた閉鎖的でストイックな姿勢は持ってはいない。著作権などに囚われないこうしたどこまでも開放された動きに新しい音楽の未来が見えているのかも？

ECHOCORD

2002年デンマーク/コペンハーゲンで、DJ、クラブオーナー、ケネス・クリスチャンソン ( kenneth christiansen ) によって設立されたレーベル。当時レーベル設立を企てていたKennethが、働いていたレコード屋でmikkel meldgaard ( aka mikkel metal )と出会ったことにより始まった。最近のクラブ系のレーベルのなかでは、個人的に最もフィットするBasic ChannelからChain Reaction、Dinなどのレーベルにみられる知的なエレクトロニカからミニマルダブを横断するグルーヴだけを展開していて、サブレーベルとして2008年に設立されたダンスフロアに焦点を合わせたHardwaxを彷彿とさせるEchocord Colour、Pattern Repeatなどをみてもデトロイト→ベルリン→ベーシック・チャンネル→→とコンセプト的にも安定していて揺るぎが無い。現在最も信頼のおけるレーベルかも。

Fans of Daniel Stefanik's monolithic Starless (not to mention its companion Starless Reshapes record) have cause for celebration. Stefanik's new long-player (also released by Statik Entertainment) largely sticks to the kind of cosmic, Detroit-fed product he brought to market on those records. I say "largely" because Stefanik wanders from that path quite a bit, forgoing homogeneity to include tracks orbiting on axes rather distant from the lean, brooding techno at the album's gravitational center.
An agile journeyman, Stefanik has already left plenty of evidence of his dexterity in a range of neoclassical styles, and with Reactivity he proves quite comfortable pursuing several disparate sonic directions. The least conspicuous of the album's deviations is "Reactivity 8," a troddin' slow-burner of weathered, rootsy dub. More notable are Stefanik's forays into house territory, "Reactivity 2" and "5" incorporating toms, cowbells and a faint soulfulness reminiscent of a sanded-down Theo Parrish.
The most jarring variation, surely, is "Reactivity 7," an acid burst of metallic, rapid fire percussion that's unlike anything else on the record. All this lends a versatility that keeps the album on its feet for the duration of its 62 minutes. In the main, though, Reactivity is held together by a downbeat backbone that should sit well with anyone with a fondness for Chain Reaction fare (take, for example, the opening and closing cuts, or especially "3").
A stately, almost somber album, Reactivity is choice headphones material, and does come equipped with several fine pulls for more energetic and less solitary enjoyment. It's a record that doesn't clamber for attention, and doesn't seem at pains to forge a bold, singular identity for its creator. But these shouldn't be marks against a listen as consistent, as satisfying, or as cohesive as this one.

エアーポート・アナウンスメント、ベルリンの大きなラジオ・アンテナ・ドームのメタル・プレートのハンマーリング、フローレンスのボタイア・ガーデンの水滴、友人からの留守番電話、古いマッキントッシュのタイピング音、東京の空調設備やタービンの音などなどのフィールドレコーディングに約一年を費やし、それらを作品の中にエディットし、ダークでアブストラクト、アヴァンギャルドなミニマルダブを展開している。MONOLAKEでの7枚目となる " Silence " は、ロバートヘンケ ( Robert Henke ) が08年11月から09年9月までの約10ヶ月を費やして完成させた作品である。MAXMSPを使用し合成された3Dの奥行知覚 ( 自然主義的空間 ) を構築した作品とも言えるだろう。
