HERMINE DERMORIANEはパリで生まれ'77年にデレク・ジャーマンのパンク映画 " Jubilee " に出演し、'82年にベルギーのクラムド・ディスクから " The World On My Plates "をデヴィッド・カニングハムのプロデュースの下発表したことしか、あまり知られていない。当時ニコの再来としてニューウェイ
HERMINE / THE WORLD ON MY PLATES ( CRAM 019 )
ヴ・プリマドンナの可憐な華として咲き誇った彼女の存在は、水玉模様の50年代風ドレスに身を包みヨーロッパモダンなキッチンに立ち、プレートに見立てた洗い立ての7インチシングルを皿洗いから手にするRichard Rayner-Canham ( フライング・リザードやマガジンのジャケ写真も彼によるところが多い ) によるジャケット写真に象徴され、そのThe World On My Plates
での不安定なヴォーカル・スタイルは、ロイ・オービソンの" Blue Angel "のカヴァーやマレーネ・デートリッヒスタイルのノスタルジアとデカダンスに輝いていて、耽美なロックの時代の終焉を意味してもいた。60年代の終わりにはインタヴュアーとしてインターナショナル・タイムスやヒッピー・マガジンでジャン＝リュック・ゴダール、フィリップ・ガレル、レン・ライなどのインタヴューし、70年代前半にはタイトロープ・ウォーカーとして、
サヴァリのGrand Magic Circusなどでパフォーミングを、かのデレク・ジャーマンのジュビリーではピアフの " Je ne regrette rien "を歌い、カオスのキャラクターとしてその存在感は強烈だった。70年代後半から80年代初頭には、劇作家としてLou Andréas Salomé、He Who Is Your Lord Is Your Child Too、The Knives Beside the Platesの3つの劇を書き下ろしている。'84年に" Lonly at the Top "を発表した後、テレヴィ・コメディ "French & Saunders "と" Absolutely Febulous "にヴォーカルを提供し、" The Tightrope "という本を出版してもいた。現在もスイスのチューリッヒやロンドン、フランスの劇場でヴォ−カリストとして活動しているようだが。
**レン・ライの話がでてきたので追記しておくが、彼は'26年にロンドンのBritish General Post Officeの映画部門でノーマン・マクラレンと共に働きながらシュールレアリスト・グループのメンバーとなって作品を発表するが、その後'44年にニューヨークへ移住し、戦後はキネティック・アート作品を制作、発表しながら自主制作映画の活動を続けて抽象表現主義の画家やアンダーグラウンド・フィルムの作家らと交流を持ちイアン・ヒューゴ(Ian Hugo)の映画 "Bells of Atlantis ( 1952 ) "では技術協力もしている。ノーマンやコリン・ロウらに大きな影響を与えた人物でソラリゼーションの応用、多重映像を抽象的な絵と重ね合わせたり、フィルムにステンシルでカラーの抽象的な模様を描くなど、その実験的な手法は色彩映画史の重要な人物として語り継がれている。彼の製作した50年代のキネティック.アートはCGの先駆けであり、ジャズ的なる遊び感覚にあふれている。現在の音響系、ミュージック・インスタレーションの始まりがここにある。

THE FRENCH IMPRESSIONISTS

80年代初頭ポストパンク・ジャズとして表出してきたスコットランド人のミュージシャン、マルコム・フィッシャーによるプロジェクト、フレンチ・インプレッショニスツは、ベルギーのレ・ディスク・デュ・クレプスキュールから1枚の作品と、'82年にOperation Twilightから " Santa Baby / Jingle Bell Rock" の7"シングルを発表しただけで、その音楽活動は中断していた。
80年代以後はミラノに住みSally Titteringtonと巡り会ったことによる彼女の励ましとインスピレーションの力を受け現在はワン・ワード・サロンと呼ぶオーガナイジング・アート / ミュージック・イ
ヴェントを2006年から再開している。現在はイングランド、イースト・サセックス州南東岸の港市ヘースティングズ、ロンドンなどに住み、2008年にフレンチ・インプレッショニスツとして " Dress "、2007年にMalcolm Fisher Sara CiceniaItalian Poetryとして " Amelia Rosselli "、2009年にピアノ・ソロ／アルバム" Songs of Innocence "などの作品を発表し、その名の通り19世紀後半のフランスの印象派絵画や近代音楽/印象派音楽にみられる激しい情緒や物語性の描写を避けた、気分や雰囲気の表現、音色に比重を置くラヴェルの"水のたわむれ" や、サティの家具の音楽にも似た静謐なサロン・ミュージックを描いている。

80年代のニューウェイヴの時代にファクトリー・レコードとベルギーのレ・ディスク・デュ・クレプスキュールの果たした役割は大きかった。
'80年にブリュッセルでMichel DuvalとAnnik Honoré、イラストレーターBenoît Hennebertによって設立されたレ・ディスク・デュ・クレプスキュールは、マンチェスターのファクトリー・レコードとのネットワークの一環として始められたア・サーテンレシオやザ・ドゥルッティ・コラム、セクション25などをリリースしていたファクトリー・ベネルクスがその始まりだった。Michael Nyman、Wim Mertens、Josef K、Cabaret Voltaire、Mikado、Isabelle Antena、Louis Philippe、Bill Nelson、Richard Jobson、Isolation Ward、Paul Haig、The Pale Fountains、Tuxedomoonなどなど、そのレーベル傘下にはAnother Side、 Él (Benelux)、Operation Twilightなども擁しニューウェイヴからポップス、ジャズ、ミニマル、クラシカル、エクスペリメンタル・ミュージックまでを横断し、最終的にはノイズ・インダストリアル/ エクスペリメンタルのL.A.Y.L.A.H. Antirecords までに至る80年代のイギリス/ヨーロッパのポップシーンの壮大なパノラマが広がっていた。

ANTENA

クラフトワークの曲名から採られたアンテナ (Antena)は Isabelle Antena （イザベル・アンテナ） を中心としたフランスのユニットで'81年に3人組ユニットとしてデビューし、 " Camino del Sol " では、エレクトロ・サンバにリミックスされたTodd Terje、Joakimの" Camino del Sol "のカヴァー曲や、イパネマの娘のカヴァー・ヴァージョンである" The Boy from Ipanema "はジョン・フォックスがプロデュースし、当時ニューウェイヴ・ファンの間で話題をさらっていた。'96年以後は事実上、イザベルのソロプロジェクトと

して活動している。個人的に彼女の音楽に興味を持っていたのは、アンテナ時代とクレプスキュール時代の'87年の " Le poisson des mers du sud " あたりまでのもので、それ以後の作品は、アシッドジャズ、いわゆるハウスDJ好みの"どジャズ "的サウンドでそれほどの興味がなくなってしまった。しかし、2005年にはアルバム"Easy Does It "のなかでニコラ・コンテ・ヴァージョン" Omerta Bossa " が収録されていたりクラブジャズにも接近していて、再び注目に値する展開を繰り広げている。

ヤング・マーブル・ジャイアンツのヴォーカリスト、アリソン・スタットン( Alison Statton ) がジャズ専門のレコードショップで働いていたサイモン・ブース( Simon Booth ) 、スパイク( Spike )とともにウェールズで立ち上げた新しいバンドがウィークエンドというジャズバンドだった。ジャズを背景にしたアコースティック感覚の、サンバからアフロビート、ショーミュージックなどの色彩を持った日常的な告白詩を添えたポップミュージックでもあり、あるひとはアントニオ・カルロス・ジョビンに似た安上がりの音楽だと評価するひともいたが、とてもエキゾチックでパーカッシブな当時のネオ・アコースティック・ムーヴメントのなかでは異彩の輝きを放っていた。ラフトレードからリリースされた'82年のアルバム " ラ・バリエテ "はポストパンクの気風に溢れていた時代を反映して15週間にわたってインディペンデント・チャートのN0.4を独占していた。'83年に発表されたライヴ・ミニ・アルバム" Live at Ronnie Scotts "には、ブリティッシュ・ジャズ界のピアニスト、キース・ティペットが参加している。ウィークエンドも過渡の時代に咲いた可憐な一輪の華だった。現在アリソン・スタットンは86年にWilliam.S.バローズの " The Doctor Is On The Market "という作品などをリリースしていたスコットランド/エジンバラにあるLes Temps Modernesレーベルから、Alison Statton & Spiketosite として" The Shady Tree " ( Les Temps Modernes - LTMCD 2395 ) というフォークロック風の作品を2006年にリリースしている。

いまではクラシック・ミュージックとしてウィム・メルテンの音楽は捉えられているのだろうが、彼が28歳の頃にソフト・ヴァーディクト名義でベルギーのクレプスキュールから " the sound of pinball machine - For Amusement Only "を発表した80年代の頭は、現代音楽、ミニマルミュージック、ジャズすらもロックやポップスの土壌から表出していた。フィリップ・グラス、マイケル・ナイマン、スティーブ・ライヒなどもしかりである。
WIM MERTENS / MAXIMIZING THE AUDIENCE ( TWI 485 )
84年にイタリア、ベニスで初演されたJan Fabreの演劇 " The Power Of Theatrical Madness " の音楽を担当したウィム・メルテンがボックスケース入りの2枚組で発表したサントラは、室内楽のようなものだが、'86年にボクが出版した雑誌 "EGO 04" のサイケデリック・バロキスムでの、ロックのアイオーンを思う。 "バロック論"のなかでエウヘーニオ・ドールズが「すべて音
楽は、つまり、あらゆる時代の音楽、あらゆる楽派の音楽は、バロックなのではなかろうか。音楽はバロックに仕え、バロックの魅惑の虜となっているのではなかろうか」という言葉を引用して、"有翼の少年 "という文章を書き、ロックという、生成したものは、一瞬たりとも静止しない緑色の運動ととらえ、ジャケットなどに使われる昆虫的、植物的なペーズリー ( グロテスク )模様などを象徴とし、"サイケデリック・バロキスム Psychedelic Baroqueism
"という特集を組んだ。あの頃のロックミュージックに、あの頃のロックファンは、なにを見ていたのだろうか。みんな偽者だったのか。ほんとにロックが好きだったのなら、このウィム・メルテンの音楽を聴いていて当然だったのだ。さて、このアルバムの劇作家ヤン・ファーブルもまた彼の作品にはしばしば昆虫をモチーフにした ( 彼は " ファーブル昆虫記 " で有名なファーブルのひ孫らしい) 彫刻や、ドローイングや脳模型の" 体の中で最高にセクシーな部分 "などでもゴチック世界が表現される。1958年、ベルギーのアントワープに生まれ、国際的な活動
を精力的に続けている彼は、美術から演劇、ダンス、オペラなどの分野を横断する。ヤン・ファーブルの 1昨年上演された " 私は血 - Je Suis Sang " のなかの「今はイエスキリスト生誕から2007年である そして私たちはあいかわらず　中世に生きている　そして私たちはあいかわらず　同じ体で生きている　内側は湿り　外側は乾いた体で」というテクストからは、相変わらず湿った場所から生まれるヨーロッパやイギリスの始源の神話世界を思う。ウィム・メルテンのこれに続くサントラには、ファクトリーレコードからの " Belly Of An Architect "というのがあり、それはピーター・グリーナウェイ監督の87年作品で、シンメトリカルでミニマルな映像が話題になったもの。
'53年ベルギーで生まれたウィム・メルテンは、作曲家、カウンターテナーの歌手、ピアニスト、ギタリスト、音楽学者の肩書きを持つ。'75年にゲント・ユニバーシティ ( Ghent University )で音楽理論を学び、ブリュッセルのロイヤル音楽学校でピアノと作曲法を学ぶ。'78年にはBRP (現Vlaamse Radio- en Televisieomroep )のプロデューサーとして活躍し、フィリップ・グラス、スティーブ・ライヒ、テリー・ライリー、メレディス・モンク、アーバンサックスなどのコンサートやファンキータウンと呼ばれる番組を主催している。70年代後半以後は作曲家として活動を始め、現在までメロディックでありながらエクスペリメンタル、アバンギャルドなミニマリズムを追求し続けてきた。古典的なクラシックの文脈とポップミュージックやジャズの文脈を横断する彼がこの28年間に制作した作品はすでに50作品を越えている。近況では、'98年にはフランダースの文化大使を任命され、2008年にEMIクラシックと契約を交わし " Receptacle "などの作品をリリースして現在も第一線で活躍している。ウィム・メルテンのミニマリズムの特徴は、第一に音楽と感情の流れのなかでスペースを拡張すること、第二には快感を得るために構築されていることに尽きるだろう。それが彼の作品にみられる反復のテクニックであり、感情浄化効果の機能だ。

EGO 04 - Psychedelic Baroqueism
'86年というあの忌まわしい時代、西宮の愛宕山にある一軒家の1階の暗室の紙焼き機でひとり写真を焼き、EGOを編集していたことも、いまは懐かしい。「一つの存在から他の存在に移ることによって、生成という不安定性のうちに、他の存在を結びつけてゆく命の流れ」。転がることによって陰陽がめまぐるしく変化する。そういった状態、あるいはそういった意味づけを我々は音楽で表したいと、ジーン・ラヴズ・イザベルは当時音楽紙でそう語っていた。孤独を好み、自分の妄想の対象や支配的情念に拘束され憂愁という病いが唯一のお友達の、錆
び付いてしまい、行方不明になってしまった当時のロックファン。元気かい。

**ウィム・メルテンの音楽をSonority As SceneryというウェブでShige氏が的確に評論されていたので紹介しておきたい。
「ウィム・メルテンは、いわゆるミニマリズムを用いる作曲家の中でも際立って幅広いレンジを持った一人である。『アメリカン・ミニマル・ミュージック』という著作を持っていることからも、研究者・評論家としての立場からミニマリズムに対して客観的な姿勢を持ち得ている。つまり音楽のスタイルや手法を客観視し「選択できること」が、むしろ自己の音楽を自在に展開させ得る強みになっているのだろう。その「自己」の部分に、メルテンの強烈な主観性が発揮されている。確かに他の作曲家の影響を聞き取ることはできる。たとえばメルテンのアーチ状の反復音型はフィリップ・グラスを思わせるかと思えば、デビュー・アルバム『フォー・アミューズメント・オンリー』ではピンボール・ゲームやインベーダーの音声をライヒ風にずらしてみたりと、作品としての自律性（つまり音楽的面白さ美しさ）を持ちつつ、他者による音楽語法の検証が顔を出すことがある。しかし一聴してそれとわかるメルテンの響きがある。それはまず第一に深い叙情であり、そして繰り返しは眩惑的効果をではなく、音楽におけるきわめて伝統的な「高揚」、あるいは突然の転調の劇的効果のためのものと思える。あるいは反対に、比較的長く歌謡的でさえあるメルテンのフレーズの繰り返しは、緊密な連続というよりもむしろ、緩慢さへと向かう傾向も持っている」。

ウィム・メルテンがディレクトしたレーベルLome Armeから発表されたKarel Goeyvaertsは、'23年ベルギー、アントワープ生まれで、'43-'47年までアントワープのRoyal Flemish Music Conservatoryと、パリのNational Conservatoryでピアノ、調和、対位法、フーガ、構成、音楽史を研究し続け、モーリス・マルトノのもとでこの2枚組アルバムで聴けるオンド・マルトノという電子楽器を習得している。彼はオリヴィエ・メシアンやストックハウゼンなどの音楽に最も影響を受けているという。50年代後半にはブリュッセルのRadio3でニューミュージックのヘッド・プロデューサーとして活躍し、Royal Academyのメンバーでもあった。他にも"Champ d'Action, Alain Franco "など多くの作品がある。電子音楽の多くの実験的な作品を生み出したヨーロッパ電子音楽の拠点WDRでの、1952年~1958年の作品のコンピレーション " Acousmatrix VI / Cologne - WDR Early Electronic Music "にもKomposition Nr. 7 など彼の曲が収録されている。
