ハートフォードシャーに住むブルース・ギルバートの自宅で、5時間以上にわたってインタヴューした時に、ブルース・ギルバートが最後にボクに言った言葉である。BCギルバートとGルイスと言えば、ワイヤーのメンバーとしての知名度のほうが高いが、特にブルース・ギルバートが80-90年にかけて疾走した運動の痕跡は、ワイヤー以上の音楽における新しい価値を生み出していた。音の子宮を探るために、スタ
ジオに入り、レコーディング、ミックスダウンというプロセスのなかで、過去の曲を破壊し再構築することによって、より効果的な新たなものを創造していた。ミニマル・ミュージック、反復音楽に影響を受けた彼らの、繰り返し繰り返し反復することによって、その過程で種々の変化が起こってくる、反復、持続、そして変化、そのプロセスこそが彼らのオーガニックで幾何学的な音楽の中心にあるテーマだった。ロックの時代が終わった80年代の頭に、そうした実験的なアヴァンギャルド・ミュージックの試み、ドーム1からドーム３を展開していたギルバート&ルイスだが、その作品が売れたのは6000枚から10000枚程度だった 。Bruce Clifford Gilbertは'46年、イギリスのハートフォードシャー州ワットフォード生まれで、Graham Lewisは'53年リンカンシャー州グランサム生まれ、この2人が巡り会ったのは'76年にロンドンでコリン・ニューマン（ボーカル、ギター）、グレアム・ルイス（ベース）、ブルース・ギルバート（ギター）、ロバート・ゴトベッド（ドラムス）の4人により結成されたワイヤーだが、'80年にそのワイヤーでの活動が終焉した後の、DomeからCupol、Lewis & Gilbertや、Duet Emmo、P'o、 He Said Omalaなどのサイド・プロジェクと、彼らのソロ・ワークは、ワイヤーの音楽以上に
重要な、80年代のファクトリー・レコードに見られるポストモダン・ミュージックの始まりをも意味していた。音楽と視覚的効果、視聴覚のインストールでもあるドームの音楽は、オーディオ・ヴィジュアル・イ
ンスタレーションとして'81年8月にロンドンのウォータルー・ギャラリーで展開されたラッセル・ミルズとのコラボレーション " Mzui " で、その頂点を迎えたが、それはブライアン・イーノの " On Land " や " Music for Airports " とAphex Twinの諸々の作品の中間に位置する重要な事件だった。90年代中期
には、ロンドンのテクノクラブでDJ Beekeeper名義でDJイングし、ダブルCD " Antiphony " を発表、'96年にはミュートレコードから" Ab Ovo " と "Ovo Mix"という12インチシングルをリリースしている。こうした彼の実験的なモダンダンス・パフォーマンスへの兆候は80年代中期から90年代の頭に発表された " This Way" や, " This Way to Shivering Man " 、" Music for Fruit " などで既に聴かれるが。そしてその片割れのGルイスは現在スウェーデンのストックフォルム郊外の絵のように美しい学園都市ウプサラに住んでいるという。BC ギルバートとGルイスが自身のレーベルDomeに残した'80ー'82年の7枚の作品。これらは30年近い時間の累積のなかでも、決して色褪せることはない。

RUSSELL MILLS
いまでは少しばかり前時代的な絵画だが、ラッセル・ミルズの描く作品は、70年代後半のパンク以後と80年代初頭のインダストリアルな時代のサウンドスケープが感じられるもので、ブライアン・イーノからマイケル・ナイマン、ナイン・インチ・ネイルズのロックイディオムの終わりを象徴する音楽とともにあった。彼のイラスト集 " More Dark Than Shark " を購入したほどに。彼の作品のなかでは、初期のパステルと水彩絵の具、鉛筆のスケッチの組み合わせによるものが気に入っているが、織物や金属、羽、骨などの素材によるコラージュ・スタイルは、腐敗していく世界観が描かれた抽象的でシュルレアリズムの要素が強く、あの時代特有の音楽が反映されたものでもあった。ラッセル・ミルズはミュージシャンとしての顔も持ちUndark (1996) 、Undark : Pearl + Umbra (1999) というアンビエント/エレクトロニックな2枚のアルバムをリリースしている。
