'82年の初め、サンフランシスコ在住のSteven Brown、Blaine L Reininger、Peter Principle、Bruce Geduldig、Winston Tongのメンバーからなるタキシードムーン ( Tuxedomoon )は、イタリアの友人Velia Papaの誘いでPolverigi Theatre Festivalに出演したことを契機に、ヨーロッパに拠点を置き活動を始める。
TUXEDOMOON / THE GHOST SONATA ( LTM 2303 )
'81年に発表されたモーリス・ベジャール ( Maurice Bejart ) のバレエ作品" Divine "のサウンドトラックや " 'Suite En Sous-Sol' "、初期のエレクトロニック/ニューウェイヴのサウンドは、 アメリカではさっぱり支持されずイギリスやヨーロッパでのロックファンに徐々に浸透していった。彼らのステージは常に16mmフィルムで作られた映像を変換したヴィデオが流され、映像と音響のオペラ仕立てのパフォーマンスを展開していた。数多く発売されていた作品のなかで、突出した作品はなんと言ってもクラブシーンが勢いを持ち始めた'91年にリリースされた " The Gost Sonata " かも知れない。'82年に行われたOpera without Wordsでのソース・テープに基づいて、スティーブン・ブラウン、ブレイン・ライニンガー、およびピーター・プリンシプルによって作られたエレクトロニックとネオ・クラシック・ミュージックが融合したミュージック・コンクレート的なサウンドトラックで、最もサイケな交響曲
と言われている。
70年代後期から80年代初頭にかけてのイギリスやアメリカでのニューウェイヴ旋風は、ある意味で多種多様な音楽が輩出されていて、誰一人としてその本質を見抜いたものはいなかっただろう。タキシードムーンですら初期はザ・レジデンツやスネーク・フィンガー、イエローらと共にラルフ
Ralfu ) ( レーベルのミュータント/突然変異として表出し、パンクジャズ・サウンドからリズム・ボックス、シンセサイザーをフィーチャーしたテクノポップ的な音楽を展開してもいたし、'83年にはライニンガーがメンバーから抜けソロ活動したり、Patrick MillerのMinimal Manの共同制作に関わるなど、'86年のクレプスキュール
からの作品 " Ship Of Fools " 以後は、事実上バンドは存続していなかったといえるだろう。80年代後半の彼らの生活はみすぼらしくもう少しで飢えるほどだっという話もある。紆余曲折の時代を生きた彼ら。そう、80年代の初期から中期にかけての時代の激変、その過剰なほど混乱する情報に人々は惑わされていた。80年代後半から90年代にかけては、ほんとにポッカリ穴の開いたNext To Nothingの時代だったのだ。2004年以後、タキシードムーンは新たなメンバーで活動を再開し、2008年にはジャーナリストIsabelle Corbisier によって476
ページにわたるタキシードムーンの本格的なバイオグラフィー伝記 " Music For Vagabonds - The Tuxedomoon Chronicles " が出版されている。" 気ままな生活を送る、放浪者 ( ヴァガボン) のための音楽 " か・・・。生きることを楽しむ人々を意味するヴァガボン。フランスのコンパニオン・ド・シャンソンにあった " 幸せ売り "のように、どこか物悲しい響きのあるタキシードムーンに相応しい言葉だ。アメリカ人という国籍を捨て、ヨーロッパ人になりきってしまったタキシードムーンの、アイデンティティ喪失の無国籍音楽に、ボクは鏡の中の自分の姿をみる。

BLAINE L. REININGER
'53年アメリカのコロラド、プエブロ生まれ。9歳でヴァイオリン、11歳でギターを学び、大学までの学生時代に音楽理論をすでに習得していた。'76年にサンフランシスコに移り、'77年にサンフランシスコ・シティ・カレッジでエ
レクトロニック・ミュージックを学んだ結果としてタキシードムーンを始めることになる。'81年ヨーロッパに移住してから26年間、多くのミュージシャンとコラボレーションしたライニンガーたちのダンス、シアター、フィルムなどの融合するミックスメディア・パフォーマンス/ミュージックは、'86年にその頂点を迎え多くの名盤を残した。ある意味で彼らもまた80年代というnext to nothingの時代に翻弄されたアーティストたちと言えるだろう。なんでもありの、なんにもなし。あの時代は実に現在の音楽シーンと符号している。ひとは常にこうした時代に大事なものを見失ってしまうのだ。'98年以後一時ギリシャのアテネに住み、現在はヨーロッパに住んでいるらしい。ブレイン・L・ライニンガーの屈折した感情/叙情性とニヒリスティックな退廃的/耽美な終末論的世界観は、21世紀に入ったいまなお、" Night Air II ( 2004 )、 " Flower Songs ( 2006 ) " 、 " Elektra; Radio Moscow Soundtrack ( 2007 ) "、" Glossolalia ( 2007 )などの作品のなかで、その悲しいヴァイオリンやヴィオラの音を響かせている。

共産党員の革命によって国外追放の目にあった中国人の両親の息子として、'51年サンフランシスコに生まれた俳優、劇作家、ヴィジュアル・アーティスト、ヴォーカリスト、シンガー・ソング・ライターの肩書きを持つタキシードムーンのウィンストン・トンは、'78年に操り人形術 " Bound Feet " を受賞していて、彼の創造は、その始まりから演劇的素養を持つものだった。
'73年に・サンフランシスコのアート・インスティチュート・オブ・カリフォルニアを卒業した彼は、 人形劇団に関わりながら、'77年にタキシードムーンのヴォーカリストとして活動を始める。当時彼がソロとして残した作品は " Theoretically Chinese " など数少ないが、そのアルバムではステファン・モリス ( ニューオーダー) 、ジャー・ウォブル ( PIL )、サイモン・トッピング ( ア・サーティン・レシオ ) 、デイヴ・フォーミュラ ( マガジン ) など、当時のイギリスの音楽シーンやファクトリーでの人脈がバックアップされたものだった。'85年にタキシードムーンを一時離れるが、2005年に再び合流し活動を始め、2008年にデペッシュモードのMartin Gore、Marc Collin とOlivier Libauxによるフランスのエレクトロニック・プロジェクトNouvelle Vague、The Dresden DollsのAmanda Palmerなどのカヴァーで構成された過去の作品の集大成ともいえる CD " In A Manner Of Speaking " を発表している。

ウィンストン・トンのライナー・ヴェルナー・ファスビンダー ( Rainer Werner Fassbinder / ニュー・ジャーマン・シネマの映画監督、脚本家、俳優 ) のドキュメンタリー映画と、ドイツ語によるFassbindeの言語声を使ったBruce Geduldigとのパフォーマンス " Frankie and Johnny " は、この世のものとは思えないほどの退廃の美が描かれている。
