'62年、イギリスのノッティンガムシャー、マンスフィールドの恵まれた良家の息子として生まれたJohn Balance ( Geff Rushton ) は、80年代にはCoil以外にも23 Skidoo、Death In June、Psychic TV、Zos Kia、Current 93のメンバーとしても活動していた。10代の頃、スロッビング・グリッスルの大ファンでピーター・クリストファーソンに出会ったことによって、TGのメンバー

としての音楽活動が始まった。その後'83年にはクリスタファーソンとCoilを結成し、ラ・モンテ・ヤングからアルヴィン・ルシェ、エストニア生まれの作曲家でミニマリスムの楽派に属するひとりと言われ、自らの音楽を「プリズムを通過する光によく似ている」と評したアルヴォ・ペルト ( Arvo Pärt ) 、Nurse With Woundのボックス・セットの作品 " Soliloquy for Lilith
"などの楽曲にみられる広いスペクトル上でのアンビエント/インダストリアルからミニマル、ネオフォーク世界を横断していた。バランスは青年時代からナチュラル・オカルト信仰者で、アストラル・エクスペリエンセス ( 星の経験 / astral experiences ) に関しての興味深い逸話を多く残しているという。コイルの音楽にみられるバランスの書く独創的な詩のイメージとオカルトのシンボリズム、実験的ではあるがそこには必ず新古典主義や民間伝承のある物語り性が描かれているのも、そうした神秘的な経験から生まれたものでもある。バランスは亡くなるまで鬱とアルコール中毒の病いを抱えていて、その生きる痛みこそが音楽創造のエネルギーとなっていたのだろう。一方ピーター・マーチン・クルストファーソンは、'55年リーズ生まれでヴィデオ・ディレクター、デザイナー ( デザイン代理店Hipgnosisiの元メンバー ) の顔も持つ、スロッビング・グリッスル、サイキックTVを経てバランスの死まで23年間続いたCoilを結成するのだが、2005年以後はイギリスからクルンテプ(タイ)まで移動してHenry Rollinsのためにカルカッタでビデオを撮るなどソロ活動し、2008年にクラビのタイの儀式のアルバムセットとDVDを含んだ4枚組CDR " The Threshold Houseboys Choir Amulet Edition " とCRD " The Threshold HouseBoys Choir " という作品をリリースしている。また2008年にはIvan Pavlov (aka COH) と組んで " Soisong " と呼ばれる新しいプロジェクトを始めている。Coilにおけるクリストファーソンの役割はミュージシャン以上にコンセプト・メーカーやイメージ・メーカー、ヴィジュアル・ワーカーとしても不可欠な存在だった。
Coilを検索しているとイギリスの雑誌 "WIRE" ( Issue 194, April 2000 ) に掲載された " Coilはいま海のそばに暮らしている。潮の流れに足を浸し、月の船に乗っている。それは、イギリスのオカルトの歴史と彼らの幻想的な夜の音楽とを結びつけるものだ " というタイトルの素晴らしいIan Penmanの評論とBeehive氏の翻訳文に巡り会った。この文章を読めば、コイルについてのボクの解説などいらない。

大天使ウリエルが16世紀の英国の魔術師ジョン・ディーのもとを訪れたのは、彼が葉の生い茂る森の中で膝まづき祈りを捧げている時であった。同じような霊の出現が、CoilのJohn Balanceにも訪れた。それは、彼が「ディスコの黙示録」と呼ぶ一夜の出来事だった……「それは、ハードコアのアシッド・クラブ・ハウスでの出来事だった---何時間か経っていて、午前4時から6時頃、みんなが外に出て行った後だ。僕はMarc Almondと一緒にそこに行ったのだけれど、エクスタシーとアシッドをやっているちょうどその時、”文字通り”天使がダンス・フロアに現れたんだ。巨大な聖書台と巨大な燃える聖書を携えて現れ、僕の目の前に全ての物事を表して見せた。…そして僕は思った、oh no、僕はこのナイト・クラブでgroovingしていて、僕は今、黙示録を体験しているんだ…」と。
このやっかいな天からの使者は、Coilの『Music To Play In The Dark vol.2』の二番目の曲、「Tiny Golden Books」に記録されている。私個人は、幸いにもダンス・フロアが降臨の場所になるなどの恐怖体験をしたことはないのが。ナイト・ライフに現れる天使達？これがCoilなのだ。やはり(after all)。
最近、Coil---すなわちBalanceと長年のパートナーPeter Christopherson、そして入れ替わりする共犯者たち---は、ロンドンの死にかけたディスコ・センターを後にし、自然の残る海辺の田舎に移り住んだ。そして彼らの新しい音楽は、彼らの家のあるウェセックスの丘陵で作られている。長年のスピード、クラッシュ、コカイン、ハッパなどの摂取に変わって、今は空と静けさが糧だ。瞑想的な曲「Paranoid Inlay」でBalanceが言っているように：「親愛なる日記どの。僕は何を止めなければならないのか？透明な梯子…光るもの…ミラー･ボール」。CoilはCCTVのネクロポリスを離れ、水辺の地へと高飛びした。大空を見つめ、石のテープに耳を傾け、潮の満ち干きに心奪われる。真夜中の太陽を探し、その中の金を探し求める。BalanceとChristophersonが引越してから一年ほどになる。そして、この引越しはCoilの新しい側面のポジティヴな黙示録として記録されることとなった。つまり、四つのシングルス『Solstice/Equinox』、二つのアルバム『Musick To Play In The Dark』、催眠術的な『Astral Disaster』、復活したTime Maschineプロジェクトのライブ作品である。Coilは、境界の一瞬、すなわち昔の手法と新しい環境の狭間に照らし出されたグレイ・ゾーンに、我々を誘ってくれる。これがCoilだ。闇の後(after dark)。→続く

1983年、Coilが活動を始めた頃、John Balanceは21歳だった（Zos Kiaというグループと一緒にソロ・パフォーマンスを行ったのが最初で、それはCD『Tranceparent』に収められている）。Coilは彼の全人生の記録でもある。それは彼の好奇心を綴ったワークブック、彼とChristophersonの人生の協奏曲、広範な道のり---セックスの水先案内、魔術の実践、音楽的実験---のクロニクルだ。それは聖なる汚物で始まる---パゾリーニの縁の地をめぐるアンチ・オイディプスの旅、サドの「sudden abyss」、野外ファック、褐色に焼けた肌、炎の中の大聖堂、カタルティックなMDMAによる神経過敏の感覚---BalanceとChristophersonは、ヴェルレーヌとランボーのようにロンドンのアーチを、地下倉庫を、公園を転がり、そして、千の黄金の光へと分解した---呪文、仮名、そして暗号。永久の「変容」を絶え間なく繰り返すこと。「形だけ変える」という有為転変。
望むならば、Coilが辿った道程を地図に描き、彼らが今日保持している自律性を固定させることができる。彼らの「アルタナティブ」な方法と手段---実践的かつメタフィジカルな「エレクトリカル・レジスタンス」---には、ポスト・パンクの時代が予見はしたものの実行しなかったものの全てがある。回想と回帰の代わりに、意志とパレットがある。Balanceのオカルト的直観とChristophersonのアコースティックな知性が結びつき、身体を恍惚とさせる音楽、時に神経を和らげる優美な音楽が生まれる。Coilは「伝統」を掘り起こし、新しい伝統を描き出す。これが掘り起こされた音楽(mined music)だ。これがCoilだ。二つのマインド(minds)の。
潮の流れは遠い記憶であり、空は灰色がかった青だった。私はBalanceに話を聞くため、ウエスト・カントリーの丘---彼らの家庭でありスタジオでもある---を訪れた。Christopherson（愛称Sleazy）はその日、別のウエスト・コースト、ロザンゼルスに出掛けていた。ビデオのディレクターズ・ハットをかぶって。つまり、金になる副業だ。それは皮肉にも、Coilがポップの資本に組せずにいられるということを保障している。「By working the soil, you cultivate the Sky（泥にまみれ、天を耕す）」：苛酷な取引で得られるバランスだ。（Henry Rollinsのためにカルカッタでビデオを撮ることは、金稼ぎにはもってこいだ。）
Balance（バランス）を造るには二つの側面が必要だ……彼は、ヴァンパイアのごとき「昔の」Johnを否定しようとしない。しかし、我々の目の前にいるBalanceは、新しい家と庭の静けさを最高の宝物だと思っている。この頑強な聖域は、崖の淵の紛れもなく風光明媚な場所に建っており、海岸と支流の中間に、宙に浮くかのように、樫の木に隣接して建っている。正に、尖端の家(threshold house：レーベル名）だ。Balanceは「鳥の議会」（彼はそう呼ぶ）を賛美する。木々をぐるりと囲み、気取り歩きをしてはおしゃべりをし、徹夜で用心棒を巡回させる鳥たち。「まるでギャングの抗争だよ---裏のカラスはテリトリーを持っていて、ビジネスをしている。カモメを追いやるんだ…」。家の中には、バロウズの声によるニュー・タイトルやオルタナ・カルチャーのカタログがある。その傍には『Silva:The Tree In Britain』とJulian Copeの『The Modern Antiquarian』もある。Coilのチャクラは一部まだ裏町にあるのかもしれないが、Balanceの心は川の支流、海岸、沈む夕陽の中に、裸のまま震えている。これが境界線の彼(liminal him: lymnal hymn)だ。→続く

「それは常に僕の関心事だった」BalanceはCoilの新しい「月」の側面について語る。「しかし、棚上げされていたんだ」
始まりはまた終わりでもある。そして、Coilの新旧の間にも完全な断絶があるわけでもないのだろう。むしろ、「circular and spiral course（円環と螺旋状の道程）」だ。過去に立ち戻る永遠の時間のねじれ、新しいエネルギーをもって古い地点に戻ること。彼らの「新しい」サウンドは、酩酊物というよりもバルサムの香りだ---雲の中の目の音楽---Balanceいわく、それはすでに「『Scatology』の中にも見出せるもの」だったそうだが、ここ3年ほどの間にずいぶんと明白になってきたものだ。
「Coil全体のシンボルは、黒い太陽だった」彼は言う。「そして、僕らは慎重に、太陽の側面から月の側面へと移行することにした。起こり得ること全てに開放的になろうと決めた。つまり、内省的な音楽を作ることだ。それは論理的なステップだ…月の音楽さ」
つまり、もし神秘主義へのステップが「ロジカル」であり得るならば、だ。しかし、当時と現在とでは明白な違いがある。彼は、彼とChristophersonが初期に関係していたThrobbing GristleやPsychic TVについて語る。「シンボルが多いに関係していたし、それを中心に全てが動いていた」あらゆるシンボルは呪文である。イエーツが書いているように、そして最近でも、---深い呼吸、閉じた瞳---雰囲気は、波に飲み込まれる以上のものだ。これら全ての水のような行為は、形が曖昧すぎて境界線を引くのは難しい。それはすでにロンドン時代、川辺から始まっていた。
「僕らがチズウィックに住んでいた頃、」Balanceは回想する。「テームズ川から通り一つ分くらいしか離れていなかった。テームズの下流に住んでいて、毎日そこに犬を連れて散歩に行っていたんだ。だから、川がいかに潮の満ち干きの影響を受けているか知っていた---驚くほど満ち干きのある川だ---そして、僕らは川の引き潮や満ち潮、その変化に獲り憑かれていったんだ」
この「引き潮や満ち潮」はまた、歴史的なものでもある。Coilにとってのテームズ川は、マンデルソンによる千年ぶりの結婚（北アイルランド和平合意）でもなければ、ドームの代わりの「啓蒙」でもない。時を遡る薄暗い回廊であり、ジョン・ディーの縁の地であり、シンクレアが歩き回った場所である。昔の労働と商業の場所、テームズ河。錬金術の痕跡、ランベス・ナイル、水晶占いの並び。入水自殺の名所でもあり、バプティズムの慰めでもある。エーテルに耳を澄ませば、釣りのルアーが液体中の塩分に物申してくる。→続く

Coilが最後にロンドンで作った作品は、『Astral Disaster』だ。「1998年のサワーン(samhain)の二日間にレコーディングした。サザックの旧地区でね。」サワーンとは、現在我々がハロウィーンと呼んでいるケルトの祭りだ---人間と超自然的世界が調和していた時代の。これは内省的な音楽だ。石と金属に波打つ光の波形。「岸辺を洗う音」の感覚。
Coilのヘルメス的な魂の音楽は、形式的なエレクトロニカの中の異端分子として存在する。Coilのあらゆる「チャンネル」は開かれている…夜中の囁きを捕らえ、死んだ少年の亡霊を捕らえ、エーテルで麻酔をかけられた魂を捕らえる。これはドラッグに代わる音楽(musick to play in place of drugs)だ。エーテルで震えるエッシャーの絵、「MU-UR」におけるトマス・ド・クインシーの潜水艦漂流、『Time Machine』の垂直発射、正体不明の『Musick...2』の悲鳴((s)cry)。この一番目の作品『Musick ...1』は、彼らの新しい「家庭内」スタジオでレコーディングされたものだ。ここに引っ越したことで、彼らの作業は早まったのだろうか？
「かなりね」Balanceは認める。「僕らは一年近く家を探していた。海の近くがよかった。ここは僕らが求めていた最終地点だ。まさに最後の家。海を見て思ったよ、ここだ！ってね。」彼は窓の外を指し、180度に広がる海と空を示した。まるで、ただで見られるロスコの絵だ。「太陽が昇り、沈む様子が見える。反対側から月が昇るもの見える。全てが見えるんだ」
それが、彼らの闇で奏でられる音楽（music played in the dark)か？
「むかしは……むかし夜更かしだったのはドラッグと刺激物のおかげだったんだ」彼は痛ましげに笑う。「今は僕らは早起きだ。僕は朝に作業をするのが好きだ」これは、彼らのゴシック的傾向を好むファンにとっては衝撃的かもしれない。しかし、夜のドラッグに浸った歌の数々は、たいてい明るい早朝、紅茶と有機食品の食事とともにレコーディングされていたのだ。彼らの「闇」を揶揄するつもりはない。むしろ、作品は感動的で、もっと複雑なものだ。現在のCoilは適切な分子を抱えている。としても、それは気まぐれに手にかけられ、検閲され…
「僕らは”月の音楽”を作ろうと決めた。そして、『よし、以前の音楽の中で否定していたものを、怖れずに、肯定してみよう』と言った。つまり、80年代は、みんなが金属を叩いてカオスをサンプリングして、レザーに身を包んでいたからね」---煌くような笑い--- そして都会の退廃の全て。僕は思ったよ、僕らはもうやり尽くしたってね。」
「大げさな計画にきこえるけれど」彼は続ける「僕は神聖な音楽を作りたいんだ。癒しの音楽であり、そして同時に、非常にノイジーで暴力的な音楽だ。---僕らの音楽にはたくさんの怒りが込められていた。今でもそうだ。やわになったわけじゃない。でも僕はいま、思春期の苦悩を和らげることに興味が向いているんだ。」それはそうだ、---人は変わり、成長し、優先順位を変える。「君の傷には羽が生えたか？」
